Fees
University of Pécs medicine fees for international students
The Medical School quotes Medicine and Dentistry tuition in US dollars, per year, split into a larger first and a smaller second semester. These are the figures on its Tuition Fees & Costs page for students starting in 2027/28; the page gives the same annual fee for each year of study.

| Fee | General Medicine (M.D.) | Dentistry (D.M.D.) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition, per year | USD 16,750 (9,000 first semester + 7,750 second) | USD 17,350 (9,300 + 8,050), dental materials included |
| Application fee | USD 200, once, by 2 July 2027 | USD 200, once, by 2 July 2027 |
| Entrance exam (in Pécs) | USD 250 per sitting | USD 250 per sitting |
| Registration fee | USD 220, with the first semester's tuition | USD 220, with the first semester's tuition |
| Refunds | Application and exam fees non-refundable; no tuition refund policy published | Application and exam fees non-refundable; no tuition refund policy published |
Refund policy: Pécs's fees page says 'The application fee and the entrance exam fee are non-refundable', and none of its admission pages or its Admission and Academic Bulletin publishes a refund rule for tuition. What the FAQ does allow is a deferral: an admitted student can postpone to the next year 'in case you have paid at least the deposit of the tuition fee, and you have not matriculated during the orientation period'. Before you pay tuition, ask studentservice.center@aok.pte.hu what happens to it if you withdraw.
The exam fee is paid again for each attempt, but the application fee only once. If you sit the exam abroad with one of Pécs's representatives, the exam fee is theirs, not the university's. Fees are paid by card in the DreamApply application profile or by bank transfer. For comparison, the Faculty of Pharmacy charges in euros: Pharmacy (PharmD) €8,400 a year and Biotechnology BSc €7,000 a year, both exempt from the application fee, and Biotechnology MSc €5,500 a semester.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements for international students
Admission to General Medicine and Dentistry rests on the entrance exam alone: the Medical School says the decision is "based solely on your performance in the entrance examination", so high-school grades decide nothing once you are eligible to sit it. To apply you need:
- A secondary-school leaving certificate and transcript, with the best possible grades in Biology and Chemistry; if you graduate in 2027, you can apply first and hand the certificate in by enrolment in September 2027
- English at B2 (upper-intermediate); no language certificate is needed, because the exam tests it
- Eligibility for higher education in your home country
- A copy of your passport and a Europass CV with a photo, in English, with the online application
There is no age limit, and a preparatory course is not required, though Pécs runs one. Hungarian is not needed to apply: Medical Hungarian is taught in the programme. Applicants who hold a BA or BSc in a medicine-related field, or have completed at least a year of one, can ask to be exempted from the exam; an IB diploma does not exempt you. The exam itself is 100 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes (Biology 20, Chemistry 20, General English 40, Medical English 20) and a 20–30 minute interview with a professor; you can sit it up to three times, once only with Stipendium Hungaricum.
Foundation year
Does the University of Pécs have a foundation year?
Not as a route into Medicine: Pécs admits only through its entrance exam, and says a preparatory course 'is not a requirement'. What it offers is preparation. The Medical School's International Studies Center in Pécs runs preparatory programmes in English and the sciences, in stages of 400 lessons, ending with an ECL language exam: 5 months from February (€4,200), 10 months from September (€6,500) or 15 months from February (€9,300), plus a €150 registration fee and a €100 application fee. Even after one, Pécs's decision on acceptance 'is solely based on your performance at the entrance examination'.
Applying from Norway: there is no snitt, since Pécs does not consider high-school grades. Norwegian students also have the ONH 1+5 (Medicine) and 1+4 (Dentistry) programmes with Oslo Nye Høyskole: students recruited by ONH spend their first year in Oslo, then a summer course in Pécs, and join the second year in Pécs. Eligibility and admission for that route are ONH's.
Application timeline
Application deadline and timeline for 2027/28
Pécs has one intake a year, in September, and admits continuously: it says that the earlier you apply, the more places it can offer, so places can fill before the deadline.

Curriculum
The six-year General Medicine curriculum
General Medicine is a six-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) taught in English, with 180 places a year: ten semesters of pre-clinical and clinical study, then a full year of clinical rotations. Classes average 25 to 30 hours a week, 350 to 420 a semester. The Medical School says its diploma is accepted in every EU country and several others, among them Norway, the USA, Canada and Israel.
| Module | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Basic | The structure and functions of the healthy human body |
| Preclinical | How disease processes form and what they look like, and basic patient examination |
| Clinical | Specific diseases, diagnosis and treatment, taught mostly on the wards |
| Clinical rotation (final year) | A full practical year on the wards, doing medical work under supervision |
Dentistry (D.M.D.) takes the same entrance exam and lasts five years (10 semesters), with 60 places: basic medical and dental sciences in the first two years, then pre-clinical and clinical modules with more patient care, electives and hospital practice.
Scholarships
Scholarships: Stipendium Hungaricum
The main scholarship is Stipendium Hungaricum, the Hungarian government's programme run by Tempus Public Foundation. In Pécs it covers the English-taught General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and both Biotechnology degrees, and it pays: no tuition fee, a monthly HUF 43,700 towards living costs for 12 months a year, a dormitory place or HUF 40,000 a month towards housing, and medical insurance. Hungarian citizens, dual citizens included, cannot apply.
You apply to the scholarship first, then to Pécs as a scholarship applicant, quoting your scholarship ID. Pécs nominates the applicants whose exam is acceptable, but Tempus makes the award, and a Stipendium Hungaricum applicant has one exam attempt instead of three. The Medical School also lists a Scholarship for Christian Young People and a Scholarship Program for the Hungarian Diaspora.
Rankings
Is the University of Pécs good for medicine?
In Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2027, the University of Pécs is in the 1001–1200 band worldwide; in THE's Medical and Health subject table (the 2026 edition, the latest), it is in the 401–500 band. THE counts 16,523 students and 15.6 students per member of staff.
Rankings say little about a medical degree's day-to-day value. The facts Pécs publishes: its M.D. is accepted across the EU and in Norway, the USA, Canada and Israel, and 3,500 students from 67 countries study at the Medical School. It publishes no acceptance rate and no pass mark, so any figure quoted elsewhere is an estimate.
| Edition | World | Medical and Health |
|---|---|---|
| THE 2027 | 1001–1200 | 401–500 (2026 table) |
Acceptance rate
What is the University of Pécs acceptance rate?
Pécs does not publish one. It lists 180 places a year in General Medicine and 60 in Dentistry, but no number of applicants, so an acceptance rate cannot be worked out from its own figures. What it does publish is how places go: admission is continuous from 1 November, 'the earlier you apply, the more spots we can offer', and the decision rests only on the entrance exam, which you may sit up to three times.

The campus
The University of Pécs Medical School on Szigeti út
The University of Pécs Medical School teaches at Szigeti út 12, where its main building was extended by a new theoretical building, handed over in September 2021. The model shows the two buildings and the gardens around them: the park behind the new building, with its pond, and part of the southern park, renewed in 2025. Medical training in Pécs began in the 1950s; teaching in English started in the 1980s and in German in 2004. The dental and clinical buildings and the rest of the university are not modelled.

New theoretical building
Handed over on 5 September 2021: two 334-seat and two 92-seat lecture halls and 34 seminar rooms, some of them student laboratories, on the ground and first floors. The Institute of Physiology, the Institute for Translational Medicine, the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy and the Department of Public Health Medicine share the second and third floors, around a central core of research laboratories.
Medical School main building
The Medical School's main building at Szigeti út 12, which the new theoretical building extends; four departments moved from it into the new building.
Campus gardens
The park behind the new building, renovated with it, has plants, new paving, outdoor furniture and an artificial pond. The southern park, nearly 11,000 m², reopened on 19 May 2025, its fence along Szigeti út removed and its car park moved.
Student life
Living in Pécs as a medical student
Pécs runs a genuinely rolling admissions process — the entrance exam and interview are offered every Wednesday from early March through mid-July, and the university's own guidance says applying earlier leaves more seats available. The medical school has around 3,500 students from some 67 countries.
FAQ
University of Pécs admissions FAQ
Yes. University of Pécs delivers Medicine in English and runs its admission process in the same language.
Yes, at all four Hungarian schools in our catalogue. At Semmelweis, Debrecen and Szeged it re-tests science orally in English (at Debrecen, biology and the second subject you chose). At Pécs it is a 20 to 30 minute personal interview with a professor on motivation and medicine-related questions, which per Pécs's own FAQ includes two biology and two chemistry questions.
At three of the four Hungarian schools in our catalogue, yes. Semmelweis, Pécs and Szeged score English as a separate written subject, split into general and medical English. Debrecen doesn't: its written papers are biology plus chemistry or physics, although the whole exam and the oral are held in English.
Not a separate one. Hungary's final exam (záróvizsga) is built into the sixth year of the degree itself, and registration afterwards with the national healthcare register is automatic. A separate specialist exam (szakvizsga) applies only later, for those pursuing specialty practice.
Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules University of Pécs has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.
