How to prepare for the Pécs entrance exam

Checked against the University of Pécs Medical School's official pages on 26 October 2026. Pécs publishes no admission rules document for 2027/28, and no marking scheme or pass mark; everything quoted is from its admissions pages.

The University of Pécs entrance exam for General Medicine and Dentistry has a written part of 100 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes, then an oral interview. The written part looks like a science test and is mostly an English one: 60 of its 100 questions are General English and Medical English. Preparing well means giving English the time its weight deserves, covering the official Biology and Chemistry topics, and getting ready for the interview. This page sets out what each part asks, what Pécs itself gives you, and a plan for the time you have.

In short

  • The written part is Biology 20, Chemistry 20, General English 40 and Medical English 20 questions, 1 hour 40 minutes in all. Pécs publishes no time limit for each part.
  • English is 60 of the 100 questions, three times Biology's share. Pécs publishes no English syllabus; it expects B2 (upper-intermediate) English and needs no certificate.
  • For the sciences, Pécs publishes a topic list (30 Biology and 20 Chemistry topics), recommends two free OpenStax textbooks and offers sample tests with solutions.
  • An oral interview of 20 to 30 minutes follows, and Pécs's FAQ says it includes two Biology and two Chemistry questions. Prepare it alongside the written part.

What each part of the exam asks

The four parts are one written exam of 1 hour 40 minutes. No electronic device is allowed except a simple calculator. Pécs does not say how many options a question has; the counts below are from its own Sample Test 1 papers, read by IvyTest.

PartQuestionsWhat to know
Biology20The official list: the cell and its organelles, viruses, membranes, replication, transcription and translation, mitosis and meiosis, and the human body system by system, to basic human genetics. On the sample, most questions have five options (A–E) and some four.
Chemistry20The official list: atoms and the periodic table, bonding, stoichiometry, gas laws, solutions, kinetics and equilibrium, pH and buffers, redox, then organic chemistry and biomolecules. Five options (A–E) on the sample, several of them calculations.
General English40No published syllabus. On the sample, every question is a sentence with one gap and four options (a–d): grammar and usage at B2 level.
Medical English20No published syllabus. On the sample: medical specialties, word parts such as -osis or -penia, and terms that 'mean the same as' a phrase. Four options (a–d).

Pécs's FAQ adds that there is no Physics in the exam, though Biophysics is studied later in the course.

What Pécs gives you to prepare with

Pécs's entrance-exam pages offer three things, all free.

  • The topic list: 30 Biology topics, from eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells to the basics of human genetics, and 20 Chemistry topics, from essential elements and water to nucleic acids. There is no list for either English part.
  • Two textbooks, recommended on the About the exam page and free online: OpenStax Biology 2e and OpenStax Chemistry 2e.
  • Sample tests in Biology, Chemistry and English, each a PDF with a separate PDF of solutions, on the Sample tests page.

Pécs's FAQ, read the same day, still answers that 'There are no specific books' and that no sample test is available. Its About the exam and Sample tests pages say otherwise, and they are the ones this page follows.

Six things that make the difference

  1. 01

Weight your time by the marks

English is 60 of the 100 questions. If your English is already strong, test that with timed practice before you move hours away from it. A rise of 10 percentage points in accuracy is worth 6 questions across the 60 English ones and 2 across the 20 Biology ones.

  2. 02

    Treat General English as grammar

On the sample, General English is single-gap sentences, not reading. Work through B2 grammar in order: tenses, modal verbs, conditionals, the passive, relative clauses, comparison and verb patterns such as 'used to' and 'be used to'.

  3. 03

Learn Medical English by its parts

Learn prefixes, suffixes and roots, such as -itis, -penia, -ectomy and cardio-, and the specialties that go with each organ. A term you can take apart does not have to be one you have met before.

  4. 04

Cover the official topics from OpenStax

Work through every topic on the Biology and Chemistry lists in the two books Pécs recommends. Practise the calculations in Chemistry with a simple calculator, since that is the one device allowed.

  5. 05

    Practise numbered-statement questions

On Pécs's sample tests, 14 of the 40 science questions list numbered statements and offer combinations such as '1,3' as the answers, and two ask which statement is wrong. Read every statement before you look at the options.

  6. 06

    Prepare the interview early

The interview asks about medicine and your motivation, and the FAQ says it includes two Biology and two Chemistry questions. Results come within a week of the exam, so practise speaking about both before the day.

A plan for the time you have

These are IvyTest's suggestions, not Pécs's. Start with a diagnostic of 100 questions in 100 minutes and read the result part by part, in questions lost: 40 lost marks in General English are worth more than 20 in Biology.

Time to the examFocus
12 weeks or morePlan your hours roughly as the paper weights its questions, with English first. Work through the official topic list in the OpenStax books, a B2 grammar course and a list of medical word parts. One timed paper every two weeks.
8 weeksRank the four parts by questions lost and repair the costliest first. One full 100-minute paper a week, reviewed the same day. Start interview practice, science answers included.
4 weeksTwo full papers a week at the real length and mix. Drill Chemistry calculations with the calculator you will use. Rehearse the interview aloud in English.
Under 4 weeksNo new science topics: consolidate the ones you know and spend the time saved on grammar and word parts. Two full papers in the last ten days.

Admission is rolling and Pécs says 'the earlier you apply, the more spots we can offer', so the date you choose is part of the plan.

What Pécs prep should cover

Whatever you prepare with, a course, a tutor or books, check it against the exam as Pécs describes it. IvyTest is independent and not affiliated with the University of Pécs.

  • General English and Medical English at the depth their 60 questions call for, not as an extra after the sciences.
  • Every topic on Pécs's own Biology and Chemistry list.
  • Timed practice of 100 questions in 100 minutes, in the real mix of five-option science and four-option English questions.
  • Practice for the interview, including Biology and Chemistry questions answered aloud in English.
  • Material you can start using now: exams run on Wednesdays from 3 March to 14 July 2027, and places fill as the year goes on.

Questions

How long does it take to prepare for the Pécs entrance exam?

Pécs gives no figure. Twelve weeks or more lets you cover the sciences, build B2 grammar and medical vocabulary, and practise the interview. With less, focus on timed papers and on the English parts, which are 60 of the 100 questions. Since admission is rolling, weigh more preparation against a later date with fewer places.

What books does Pécs recommend?

Two, both free online: OpenStax Biology 2e and OpenStax Chemistry 2e, listed on the About the exam page. Pécs's FAQ still says there are no specific books; the About the exam page is the newer advice.

Is there a syllabus for the English parts?

No. Pécs publishes topics for Biology and Chemistry only, and expects B2 English without a certificate. Its English sample test shows the question types: one-gap grammar sentences for General English, and specialties, word parts and synonyms for Medical English.

Do I need Physics for the Pécs entrance exam?

No. Pécs's FAQ says there is no Physics exam, though you will study Biophysics later in the course. The written part is Biology, Chemistry, General English and Medical English.

Practise in the real format

The free sample test has all 100 questions of the written part, 20 Biology and 20 Chemistry with five options, then 40 General English and 20 Medical English with four, to sit in 100 minutes, with every answer explained. When you want more, the IvyTest Pécs package adds a full simulator, the study guide, lessons and interview practice.
