Pécs entrance exam scoring: pass mark, marking and guessing

Checked against the University of Pécs Medical School's official pages on 26 October 2026. Pécs publishes no admission rules document for 2027/28, and no marking scheme or pass mark; everything quoted is from its admissions pages.

The University of Pécs publishes how its entrance exam is built, but not how it is marked. There is no published mark per question, no rule for wrong or blank answers, no pass mark and no weighting between the written part and the interview. What Pécs does say is that the exam alone decides. This page sets out what is published, what is not, and what follows from it for guessing and for your target.

In short

  • The written part is 100 questions: Biology 20, Chemistry 20, General English 40, Medical English 20. Pécs publishes no marks per question.
  • No Pécs admission page mentions negative marking, either way. Silence is not a rule: do not assume a penalty, and do not assume there is none.
  • Admission rests 'solely' on your performance at the entrance exam, written part and interview. School grades, AP and SAT results are not considered.
  • With no penalty a guess always beats a blank; with an unknown one, a guess pays once you can rule out options.

What decides'Solely' the entrance exam (FAQ; Entry requirements; Admission and Academic Bulletin)

Checked on About the exam, Entrance exam in Pécs, Arranging the entrance exam, the FAQ, Entry requirements, Decision on being accepted and the Admission and Academic Bulletin, all on 26 October 2026. The only scores any of them mention are the ones a candidate loses for using a phone or other device: 'cancellation of your exam scores'.

Should you guess?

Call the unknown deduction for a wrong answer p, in marks, with one mark for a correct answer. A blind guess among n options is right one time in n, so on average it is worth 1/n − (n − 1)/n × p. If there is no penalty (p = 0) a guess is worth 1/4 on a four-option question and 1/5 on a five-option one, always more than a blank.

With a penalty, a blind guess pays only while p stays below 1/3 on four options and below 1/4 on five. Ruling options out raises the value of a guess whatever p is, which is why narrowing the options matters more than guessing blindly.

Nothing+0.25+0.20+0.33
0.25 marks+0.060+0.17
0.5 marks−0.13−0.200

The deductions are examples to show the arithmetic. Pécs publishes none, and these are not Pécs's rule.

What decides admission

Pécs is direct about this. Its FAQ answers: 'We do not consider high school grades or results, the admission decision is solely made based on your performance at the entrance exam.' It gives the same answer when asked whether AP or SAT results are required. The Admission and Academic Bulletin says: 'High school grades are NOT considered.'

The entrance exam is the written part and the oral interview together; About the exam calls it 'a complex exam consisting of two parts'. How the two are combined is not published. Those who pass receive an Acceptance Letter with the next dates and deadlines.

One page reads differently. Entry requirements asks for a school diploma 'with the best possible grades in Chemistry and Biology', while the same page and the FAQ say admission rests solely on the entrance exam.

What to aim for

With no published pass mark, aim for a strong result in all four parts, weighted by their size. On a 100-question paper one question is one percentage point of the total, and the English parts are 60 of them. A candidate at 85% in Biology and 50% in General English answers 17 + 20 = 37 of those 60 questions; one at 65% in both answers 13 + 26 = 39.

Because the marking is unknown, IvyTest practises with one mark for a correct answer and nothing for a wrong or blank one, and says so. Admission is rolling, and Pécs says the earlier you apply, the more places it can offer, so being ready and sitting early pull against each other: plan for both.

Questions

What is the pass mark for the Pécs entrance exam?

Pécs publishes none. No minimum score appears on its admission pages or in its Admission and Academic Bulletin, read on 26 October 2026. Those who pass the entrance exam receive an Acceptance Letter; what counts as a pass is not published.

Is there negative marking in the Pécs entrance exam?

Pécs does not say. None of its admission pages mentions a penalty for wrong answers, and none rules one out. Treat any claim either way as unconfirmed, and guess when you can narrow the options.

Does Pécs look at my school grades?

No. Its FAQ says high-school grades and results are not considered and the decision rests solely on your performance at the entrance exam; AP and SAT results are not required either. You still need a school-leaving certificate to enrol.

How much does the interview count?

Pécs does not publish a weighting. The interview is the obligatory second part of the entrance exam, and the decision rests on the exam as a whole.
