Entry requirements

Entry requirements for international students

The Medical Programme page and the FAQs set these requirements for General Medicine:

  • You must be 18 by 31 December of the year you apply.
  • A school-leaving certificate from an accredited school; final-year students may apply with proof that they attend school. Failing Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or English in your final year rules you out.
  • The entrance examination, unless you are exempt: three A2 levels with an A in two sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Physics), the IB Diploma with grade 5 in two Higher Level sciences, or a First Class Honours BSc in a natural or biomedical science.
  • GED holders: the Foreign Students' Secretariat's FAQ asks for at least 165 in each subject for General Medicine; the faculty's English FAQ (read on 16 October 2026) says 145. Ask the Admissions Office which applies, and expect to sit the entrance exam either way.
  • Competence in written and spoken English is part of the requirement; the entrance exam's English section and oral test it.

How to apply

How to apply to medicine at the University of Szeged

Applications for 2027/28 open on 1 December 2026 on DreamApply (apply.u-szeged.hu) and close on 1 June 2027 at 23:59 CET for General Medicine (transfers by 15 May 2027). Admission is rolling and places go first come, first served, so an early application and an early exam session matter.

  • Create a DreamApply account, fill in the application and upload your documents; the University asks for 2 to 3 weeks to process them.
  • Pay the €300 application fee by Simple Pay within 14 days of its invoice: an unpaid invoice blocks the submission.
  • Register for an entrance-exam session. In 2027 there are nine, from 26-28 January to 22-24 June, each with a registration deadline a week before; you may sit at most two exams, and choosing the last session first rules out a repeat.
  • Sit the written test on Coospace (60 questions in 60 minutes, no going back) on the first day, and the 20-minute Zoom oral with a professor on the second or third.
  • If you are admitted, pay the first semester within 14 days of the Admission Letter to keep your place; admission by 1 April earns €300 off.

Study plan

The Szeged medicine curriculum and study plan

General Medicine takes 12 semesters and leads to the title Doctor of Medicine; the faculty admits close to 250 students a year to its English programme. The first two years (the Basic Module) lay the foundations, clinical practice starts in year 3, and the final year is 40 weeks of clinical rotations.

The suggested study plan for year 1, autumn, in the 2026/2027 curriculum: Basic Life Support; Anatomy, Histology and Embryology I with dissection and histology practice; Introduction to Medicine; Medical Physics I; Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics I; and Hungarian Language I, with Basics of Medical Chemistry strongly recommended. Latin medical terminology is completed in the Basic Module, and a four-week nursing practice follows year 1.

In 2026/27 the autumn semester's teaching runs from 7 September to 12 December 2026 and the spring semester's from 8 February to 15 May 2027, with spring exams from 18 May to 26 June 2027.

Rankings

University of Szeged in the rankings

Read on the rankings' own sites on 12 October 2026: in the QS World University Rankings the University of Szeged was the top Hungarian university in every edition from 2020 to 2024, but not in 2025 (=570, behind Eötvös Loránd at 564) or 2026 (=597, behind Debrecen and Eötvös Loránd). In Times Higher Education's World University Rankings it has been in the 1001-1200 band since 2023. The faculty's own page still says QS has ranked Szeged Hungary's best for more than a decade, which the 2025 and 2026 tables no longer show.

The medical school is named after Albert Szent-Györgyi, who received the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 'for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid', while at Szeged University.

FAQ

University of Szeged admissions FAQ

Yes. University of Szeged delivers Medicine in English and runs its admission process in the same language.

Yes, at all four Hungarian schools in our catalogue. At Semmelweis, Debrecen and Szeged it re-tests science orally in English (at Debrecen, biology and the second subject you chose). At Pécs it is a 20 to 30 minute personal interview with a professor on motivation and medicine-related questions, which per Pécs's own FAQ includes two biology and two chemistry questions.

At three of the four Hungarian schools in our catalogue, yes. Semmelweis, Pécs and Szeged score English as a separate written subject, split into general and medical English. Debrecen doesn't: its written papers are biology plus chemistry or physics, although the whole exam and the oral are held in English.

Not a separate one. Hungary's final exam (záróvizsga) is built into the sixth year of the degree itself, and registration afterwards with the national healthcare register is automatic. A separate specialist exam (szakvizsga) applies only later, for those pursuing specialty practice.

Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules University of Szeged has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.

Yes. University of Szeged-format practice sessions are available inside the simulator and align with the guide section by section.
