Studying Medicine at Charles University: All 5 Faculties Compared

Charles University teaches medicine in English at five faculties: the First, Second and Third Faculties in Prague, and the Faculties of Medicine in Hradec Králové and Pilsen. Each sets its own fee, its own entrance exam and its own dates, so the questions people ask about "Charles University medicine" have five answers. This page puts them side by side for the 2027/28 intake, from the university's admissions records and each faculty's own pages, read on 29 October 2026.

Fees

Charles University medicine fees for 2027/28, faculty by faculty

Tuition is set by each faculty for each year's new students, and it is the same for every nationality in the English programmes. These are the figures in Charles University's 2027/28 admissions records, read on 29 October 2026:

Annual tuition for students starting in 2027/28 (English programmes)

Hradec KrálovéCZK 400,000CZK 410,000Czech crowns
PilsenCZK 390,000CZK 410,000Czech crowns

Two of the faculties' own pages still show last year's figure: LF2's Fees and Funding page gives CZK 420,000 for students enrolling in 2026/27, while its 2027/28 record says CZK 440,000. LF3's General Medicine page already gives CZK 440,000, due by 30 October each year. Pilsen asks first-year students to pay the whole year before enrolment, with no instalments, and says the fee does not cover accommodation, meals or living costs.

Living costs come on top. Pilsen, for one, asks admitted students to show at least CZK 120,000 in their account for their stay. Students from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Germany and France may be able to fund the fee from home: LF2's fees page lists the state loans and grants by country.

Application fee

The Charles University application fee at each faculty

Every faculty charges its own fee for each application, and an application counts only once it is paid. Apply to three faculties and you pay three fees; at LF1 a separate application (and fee) is needed for General Medicine and for Dentistry.

The recognition of a foreign school-leaving certificate is a separate fee where the faculty assesses it: CZK 1,050 at LF3 and Pilsen. Partner agencies that run sittings abroad charge for their services on top, as Pilsen's page points out.

Rankings

Charles University medicine ranking: QS, THE and ARWU

The rankers rank Charles University as a whole, and by subject; none ranks its five medical faculties separately, so a "faculty ranking" quoted anywhere is the university's. These are the figures on the rankers' own sites, read on 29 October 2026:

Charles University in the world rankings

ShanghaiRanking GRAS, Dentistry & Oral Sciences2026201–300
QS World University Rankings2025=246

QS's own site refuses automated reading, so the QS figure is the latest edition we could read in QS's published data, 2025; later QS editions and QS's Medicine table are not given here. Times Higher Education's profile describes Charles University, founded in 1348, as the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic.

Acceptance rate

Charles University acceptance rate: what the faculties publish

No faculty publishes an acceptance rate. What Charles University does publish, in each programme's admissions record, is a counter: "Rate of admitted and total applicants in the past academic year". The table gives those counts as printed, the places each faculty expects to fill in 2027/28, and the share of applicants admitted, which is our arithmetic on the university's own counts, not a figure the university gives.

Admitted and total applicants, past academic year, as printed in the 2027/28 records
ProgrammeAdmitted / applicantsAdmitted per 100 applicants (our arithmetic)Expected places 2027/28
LF1 General Medicine119 / 61419150
LF1 Dentistry31 / 1082930
LF2 General Medicine305 / 69944100
LF3 General Medicine92 / 5481790
Hradec Králové General Medicine208 / 37755105
Hradec Králové Dentistry33 / 804125
Pilsen General Medicine99 / 29833105
Pilsen Dentistry27 / 873128

Read these with care. The records do not say which year "the past academic year" is. "Applicants" counts everyone who applied, including people who never sat the exam, and "admitted" counts admission decisions, not students who enrolled: LF2 admitted 305 for 100 expected places because many admitted applicants go elsewhere. And the counts mix every route in, including applicants admitted without the written test. So a low figure does not mean a hard exam, nor a high one an easy exam: the exams differ too much to compare that way.

Entry requirements

Charles University medicine entry requirements for international students

Four things are common to all five faculties. You need a completed secondary education with a school-leaving examination (Czech "maturita" or its equivalent abroad), and you must prove it before enrolment: where the faculty assesses a foreign certificate, it wants legalised documents (an apostille or superlegalisation from the issuing country) by 31 August 2027 at LF1 and Pilsen. You must pass that faculty's own entrance exam, in English. You pay its application fee. And none of the five admissions records sets a minimum grade for applying: A-levels, the IB or national grades matter only where they let you skip the written test.

Hradec Králové also asks that your secondary education would admit you to the same programme in your own country. LF1, Hradec Králové and Pilsen allow one attempt per academic year. Nostrification, the recognition of a foreign school-leaving certificate, is handled by the faculty for the admission procedure only: LF1's page says its assessment is "valid only for the purposes of admission procedure".

Dates

Partner agencies run sittings abroad on their own dates: LF2's list starts with Tel Aviv on 6 January 2027 and Dubai on 17 January, and many are still to be announced. A sitting abroad may need your application in earlier than 30 April.

Tuition-free study

Is it free to study medicine in the Czech Republic?

Yes, in Czech. Study in Czechia, the government's study portal, says that public universities "offer tuition-free degree programmes taught in Czech, regardless of nationality". The faculties teach General Medicine in Czech too, with separate admission procedures (LF1's admissions record and LF3's programme page mention theirs); Hradec Králové's programme page puts it in one line: "also available in the Czech language – free of charge with separate entrance procedure".

The English programmes on this page are the paid route. Studying in Czech means reaching the language level the faculty asks for first (Study in Czechia says many Czech-taught programmes require at least B2).

From Norway or Sweden

Applying from Norway or Sweden

Admission does not depend on your Norwegian or Swedish grades: every faculty decides on its own entrance exam. Grades help in one place: LF2 waives its written test for top results, which for Norway means at least 5 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics, and for Sweden at least B in the same subjects, from 2024/25 or later (at most 25 waivers in that group).

You can sit some exams near home. LF2 lists a sitting in Oslo through EduPlanet (date to be announced), LF3 works with a Norwegian agency, Study in Prague, and Pilsen lists a sitting in Gothenburg (date to be announced). Lånekassen in Norway and CSN in Sweden are listed on LF2's fees page as funding full-degree study abroad, including tuition within limits.

Choosing

Which Charles University faculty should you choose?

Since each faculty has its own exam, the choice usually comes down to the test that suits you, then the city and the fee. LF1 calls itself the oldest, has the most places (150), and its online MMI alone decides admission. LF2 adds Physics and Logic and marks its science items all-or-nothing. LF3 tests only Biology and Chemistry, then a 10-minute interview. Hradec Králové lets you choose Physics or Mathematics. Pilsen has three sciences and no interview at all.

You can apply to several: each is a separate application with its own fee, and the faculties' own sittings fall on different days, so most combinations can be sat.

FAQ

Charles University medicine: questions

Not one that replaces the entrance exam. Charles University's Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies (UJOP) runs paid foundation courses for medicine in English: COMPLEX in Poděbrady from September 2027 (CZK 186,160, about €7,990) and FAST in Prague from November 2026 or November 2027 (from CZK 115,000, about €4,936). UJOP's own answer to "Will I have to take an entrance exam after the Foundation?" is "Yes". LF3 runs its own Premedical Course, 11 January to 27 May 2027, for CZK 125,000, with application, payment and documents due by 15 November 2026; Pilsen says it organises no preparatory course.

It depends on the faculty, and you pay it at each one you apply to: €285 at LF1, CZK 2,500 at LF2, CZK 2,000 at LF3, CZK 2,500 at Hradec Králové and CZK 990 at Pilsen (CZK 1,000 in its admissions record), for the 2027/28 intake.

For students starting General Medicine in English in 2027/28: €24,250 a year at LF1, CZK 440,000 at LF2 and LF3, CZK 400,000 at Hradec Králové and CZK 390,000 at Pilsen. Dentistry costs €24,250 at LF1 and CZK 410,000 at Hradec Králové and Pilsen. Medicine taught in Czech is tuition-free.

No faculty publishes one. The admissions records give admitted and total applicants for "the past academic year": 119 of 614 at LF1, 305 of 699 at LF2, 92 of 548 at LF3, 208 of 377 at Hradec Králové and 99 of 298 at Pilsen (General Medicine). They count applicants who never sat the exam and admitted applicants who went elsewhere, so they are not acceptance rates.

Times Higher Education describes it as the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic, founded in 1348, and puts it at 451–500 in the world for 2027 and 301–400 in Medical and Health, and ShanghaiRanking at 151–200 in Clinical Medicine for 2026. The rankings measure the whole university, not one faculty, and all five faculties award the same degree, MUDr.

Yes. Each faculty is a separate application, with its own fee, exam and result. LF1's admissions page says so in as many words: "If you are also applying to other faculties of Charles University, those applications must be submitted separately as well."
