Szeged entrance exam scoring: pass mark, penalty and blanks
Checked against the University of Szeged's official pages on 26 October 2026. Szeged's 2027/2028 Admission and Academic Bulletin is not out yet (it says by the end of November 2026); everything here is from its admission pages as read on the date above.
Key figures
- for a correct answer / a wrong one: nothing is deducted
- +1 / 0
- an answer is needed to move on; 'No answer' cannot be chosen
- No blanks
- published pass mark for fee-paying applicants
- None
- in each subject, for Stipendium Hungaricum applicants to reach the oral
- 50%
The University of Szeged's marking is short to state: one point for a correct answer, nothing taken off for a wrong one, and no way to leave a question blank. What it does not publish is a pass mark. This page sets out the rule, what follows from it for guessing, and the one threshold Szeged does publish, which applies only to scholarship applicants.
In short
- The written test has 60 questions, 20 in each block, at one point each, so the maximum is 60. A wrong answer costs nothing.
- You must select an answer to move to the next question, and you cannot go back. Every question is answered, so the only choice is how well you guess.
- Szeged publishes no pass mark, minimum score or ranking for fee-paying applicants. The Admission Board of the Medical School decides, and Szeged does not say how the written test and the oral are weighed.
- Stipendium Hungaricum applicants are invited to the oral only if they score at least 50% in every subject of the written test: 10 of 20 in each.
The marking rule, as Szeged publishes it
| Points | |
|---|---|
| Correct answer | +1 |
| Wrong answer | 0: 'No points will be deducted if you give a wrong answer' |
| Leaving a question blank | Not possible: 'The „No answer” choice cannot be chosen' |
| Going back to change an answer | Not possible: you move forward only |
| Each block (Biology, Chemistry or Physics, English) | 20 questions, so 20 points at most |
| The written test | 60 points at most |
The exam page says each question has '4-5 choices'. Szeged's sample tests have five in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and four in English; the arithmetic below uses those counts.
Guessing: always answer, and narrow first
Because a wrong answer costs nothing and a blank is impossible, there is no decision about whether to guess, only about how well. A guess among n options is right one time in n, so on average it is worth 1/n of a point.
Guessing blindly at every question would score, on average, (40 × 1/5) + (20 × 1/4) = 8 + 5 = 13 of 60, about 22%: 40 science questions with five options, 20 English questions with four. Every point above that comes from knowing the answer or ruling options out.
Ruling options out is worth more than it looks. Taking a five-option question down to two choices lifts its value from 0.20 to 0.50 of a point. Across 20 science questions, that is 20 × 0.30 = 6 points, a tenth of the test.
| Options you cannot rule out | Average value of the guess |
|---|---|
| 5 (a science question, blind) | 0.20 points |
| 4 (an English question blind, or one science option ruled out) | 0.25 points |
| 3 | 0.33 points |
| 2 | 0.50 points |
Is there a pass mark?
None is published for fee-paying applicants. The Entrance / Evaluation Examination page, both of Szeged's FAQs, the Medical Programme page and the Online Application page give no pass mark, minimum score or ranking rule, and none of them says how the written test and the oral are weighed against each other.
One number is often mistaken for a pass mark and is not one: the GED score. It is a condition for applying with a GED diploma, not a score on the entrance exam. Szeged's two FAQs disagree on it for General Medicine: the Foreign Students' Secretariat's says at least 165 in each subject, the faculty's says at least 145. Ask the Admissions Office which applies.
Szeged says it admits close to 250 students a year to the English-language Medicine programme. It publishes no applicant numbers, so there is no official acceptance rate.
The one published threshold: Stipendium Hungaricum
Szeged's Stipendium Hungaricum page sets special conditions for scholarship applicants. They are invited to the oral only if they 'reach at least 50 % at the written examination (in every subject separately)'. With 20 questions in each subject, that is at least 10 correct in Biology, 10 in Chemistry and 10 in English.
Each subject counts on its own. A total of 30 made of 14, 10 and 6 does not qualify, because 6 of 20 in one subject is below half. For scholarship applicants the exam cannot be repeated, no exemption is possible, and Physics is not offered instead of Chemistry.
This rule is on the scholarship page only. Szeged publishes no such threshold for fee-paying applicants.
How the decision is made, and what to aim for
Decisions are made by the Admission Board of the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School. The exam has two parts: the written test, then the oral, about 20 minutes on Zoom with a University Professor, where a general conversation is followed by two Biology and two Chemistry questions in English. If you are admitted, the Letter of Admission comes through Dream Apply. Admission is rolling, with places offered 'on a first come first served basis'.
With no published pass mark, aim for strength in all three blocks rather than a peak in one: each is worth 20 points. A useful check, IvyTest's suggestion, is the scholarship rule: if a mock leaves any block under 10 of 20, that block needs work first.
Questions
What is the pass mark for the Szeged entrance exam?
Szeged publishes none for fee-paying applicants. The Medical School's Admission Board decides, and no minimum score for fee-paying applicants appears on Szeged's admission pages. Only Stipendium Hungaricum applicants have a published threshold: at least 50% in every subject of the written test to be invited to the oral.
Is there negative marking at Szeged?
No. A correct answer is worth one point and 'No points will be deducted if you give a wrong answer'.
Can I leave a question blank in the Szeged exam?
No. You must select an answer to move to the next question, and the 'No answer' choice cannot be chosen. Since a wrong answer costs nothing, rule out what you can and pick the most likely option.
Is the GED score of 165 the Szeged pass mark?
No. It is a condition for applying with a GED diploma, not an exam score. The Foreign Students' Secretariat's FAQ gives 165 in each subject for General Medicine and the faculty's FAQ gives 145, so ask the Admissions Office which applies.
