UniSR · Scoring and ranking
How the San Raffaele admission test is scored and ranked
Checked against Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele's official pages on 27 October 2026. UniSR had not published its 2027/28 Calls on 27 October 2026; every rule and date quoted is from the 2026/27 Calls, which apply to 2026/27 only.
Key figures
- points for a correct, wrong or blank answer
- +1 / −0.25 / 0
- maximum score: 60 questions at 1 point each
- 60
- minimum score: places go down the ranking
- None
- correct in a science, below which an OFA is assigned
- 50%
The International MD Program's admission test has one scoring rule, written in both 2026/27 Calls: one point for a correct answer, a quarter of a point off for a wrong one, nothing for a blank. There is no pass mark. Each candidate is ranked on the better of their session scores, against the other candidates of their own quota, EU or non-EU. This page explains the rule, what it means for guessing, how the ranking and its tie-breaks work, and the separate science threshold that decides the extra learning requirement (OFA).
In short
- +1 for a correct answer, −0.25 for a wrong one, 0 for a blank, across 60 questions: the score runs to 60, and can go below zero.
- No minimum score: candidates are ranked by their best score across the sessions they sat, and places go down the list.
- Ties are broken on logic and problem solving, then reading comprehension, biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics, then by age, the youngest first.
- Separately, fewer than 50% correct in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics brings an OFA in that science, to clear before the second year.
The scoring rule
Both Calls (Art. 6) set the same rule for every question in the test, logic and science alike. The 7 reserve questions answered after the 80 minutes do not count, unless one of them replaces a question withdrawn for an anomaly.
| Answer | Points |
|---|---|
| Correct | +1 |
| Wrong | −0.25 |
| Blank | 0 |
Worked example (IvyTest's): 40 correct, 8 wrong and 12 blank score 40 − (8 × 0.25) = 38.00 out of 60. After session 1 the Online Review shows only your score; after session 2 it shows your tests with their correction, and both scores.
When a guess is worth it
An answer you are p likely to get right is worth p × 1 − (1 − p) × 0.25 points, against 0 for a blank. That is above zero whenever p is above 20%, whatever the number of options. The Calls do not state how many options each question has; the table assumes five, the format of IvyTest's own practice material, and shows a pure guess among the options you have not ruled out.
| Options left to choose from | Expected points from a guess | Over 10 such guesses |
|---|---|---|
| 5 (nothing ruled out) | 0 | 0 |
| 4 | +0.06 | +0.63 |
| 3 | +0.17 | +1.67 |
| 2 | +0.38 | +3.75 |
Worked out as 1/n − (n − 1)/n × 0.25 for n options. These are averages: any single guess still gains 1 or loses 0.25. Whether and when to guess is IvyTest's advice, not a UniSR rule.
How the ranking is built
- Two Calls, two lists: EU candidates (including non-EU citizens resident in Italy) compete for the EU places, non-EU candidates resident abroad for theirs. In 2026/27 that was 86 and 64 places.
- Your best score among the sessions you sat is the one ranked. A breach of the rules is different: in session 1 it bars you from session 2 and the ranking, in session 2 it removes you from the ranking and cancels session 1 too.
- Ties go to the higher score in logic and problem solving, then reading comprehension, biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics, in that order; if still tied, to the younger candidate.
- EU list: everyone ranked must declare in June that they want a place, and only those who do form the Definitive Ranking List, whose first 86 enrol in July.
- Non-EU list: the first 64 confirm their place with a non-refundable €1,500 advance by 9 April, deducted from the first instalment; places then pass down the list.
Places turned down pass to the next candidates on each list by notice. The scores at which the 2026/27 lists stopped are on the cut-off research page, not repeated here.
The OFA: a threshold per science
The IMDP Teaching Regulations (DR 10090 of 9 June 2026) say that an OFA in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Biology is assigned when fewer than 50% of the test's questions in that area were answered correctly. It does not affect your place on the ranking, but it follows you into the course.
- Each OFA comes with supplementary teaching, which students in debt must attend and pass before the start of the second year.
- An assessment decides whether the OFA is cleared. If it is not, the student's career may be blocked at the end of the first year, freezing exams already passed.
- First-year courses list a cleared OFA as a prerequisite: Mathematics for Basic medical statistics, Physics for Medical Physics, Chemistry for Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biology for Molecular cell biology.
UniSR does not publish how the 24 science questions divide between the four subjects, so the number of correct answers needed in each is not known in advance.
Questions
What is the pass mark for the San Raffaele test?
There is none. The Calls set no minimum score: candidates are ranked by their best score and places go down each list, EU and non-EU, until they are filled.
Is there negative marking in the UniSR admission test?
Yes. A wrong answer costs 0.25 points, a correct one earns 1 and a blank earns 0. An answer pays on average when you are more than 20% likely to be right.
If I sit both sessions, which score counts?
The better one. The ranking uses each candidate's best score among the tests taken, so a weaker second session does not lower your result; only a breach of the testing rules can cost you both.
Does the OFA affect my ranking?
No. The OFA is decided after the test, science by science, when fewer than 50% of your answers in that science are correct. It means extra teaching to complete before the second year, and some first-year courses require it cleared.

Practise in the real format
The free practice paper has 60 questions in the format of the 2026/27 Calls, 36 on logic, problem solving and reading comprehension and 24 on Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, to sit in 80 minutes with the +1, −0.25 and 0 scoring, every answer explained. It uses IvyTest's five-option format, as the Calls do not state the number of options. When you want more, the IvyTest San Raffaele package adds a full simulator, the study guide and lessons.
