The Basic Medicine Course (BMC) is the University of Debrecen's premedical year in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, taught by its Faculty of Medicine before the first year of Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy. You reach it in one of two ways: the entrance-exam committee places you there instead of the first year, or you apply for it from the start. Either way you sit the same entrance exam. This page sets out what Debrecen publishes about the course: who it is for, what it costs, how you are tested and how you move on to year 1.

In short

  • The BMC is a preparatory programme. 'Students successfully completing the course are directly admitted to their chosen program': Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy.
  • One of the entrance exam's three results is 'admitted to Basic Medicine Course (preparatory program)'. You can also apply for the BMC directly; the exam is compulsory either way.
  • BMC I takes two semesters, September to June. BMC II, the intensive course, takes one, January to July. The tuition is 7,500 USD for students admitted for 2026/27.
  • You sit regular Self Control Tests in each subject, then a Final Exam, unless your test scores exempt you. The pass mark depends on the programme you are heading for.

What the Basic Medicine Course is

Debrecen lists the BMC among its foundation programmes, run by the Faculty of Medicine, and recommends it 'to those students who do not have sufficient knowledge in Biology, Physics and Chemistry from high school' and need 'a period of preparation' before Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy.

There are two versions. BMC I runs for two semesters from September. BMC II, the Intensive Basic Medicine Course, runs for one semester, January to July, and is also for students 'who would like to refresh their high school knowledge'.

The subjects are Introduction to Biology, Biophysics and Medical Chemistry, in lectures and seminars, plus Hungarian (36 hours in BMC I's second semester). Students are grouped by track: General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Public Health. BMC I had 324 students in 13 groups in 2026/27; BMC II had 65 in 4 groups in January 2026.

Placed there, or applying for it

Debrecen does not say what performance leads to the first year rather than the BMC: part scores are 'for internal use only', so you learn the result, not the margin.

Entry requirements and the test

  • A high school certificate. Final-year students apply with transcripts of the last two or three years and predicted grades.
  • English: a B2 certificate from a proctored test, unless English is your first language or you were schooled in it.
  • A study gap of at most six years (two for citizens of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Syria, Afghanistan, Burma and Yemen).
  • The application form, proof of citizenship, a CV, a medical certificate on Debrecen's template and the 150 USD application fee.
  • The entrance exam: a written test in Biology and in Chemistry or Physics (your choice), 45 minutes each on the entrance-exam page (50 in the FAQ), then an oral in the same two subjects. The entrance procedure fee is 350 USD.

Fees and duration

Both versions cost the same. The fees are those for students admitted for 2026/27 (2027/28 fees are not published) and tuition includes health insurance, the medical check-up and the student card. After the BMC, Medicine is 16,900 USD a year, Dentistry 17,500 and Pharmacy 8,000.

In the course, a third attempt at an exam, or improving a pass, costs 2,000 HUF. The orientation slides also list an undefined 'course change': free within two weeks of registration, then 1,500 USD until the semester ends. Ask the coordinator what it covers.

Refunds, per the fees page: the application fee is not refundable; the entrance exam fee only if you cancel at least a week before the exam; the seat reservation fee only if the visa is refused; a visa-bound freshman's prepaid tuition if the visa is refused or, in exceptional cases, cancelled, with a 1,500 USD processing fee on requests made less than four weeks before the start.

How the year is tested

  1. 01

    Self Control Tests

Written tests in each subject: four a semester in BMC I, six in BMC II. Seminars are compulsory: in BMC I, four missed in a semester cost any exemption, five end your place.

  2. 02

End of Semester Exam (BMC I)

Three dates in the winter exam period. Optional for first-time students, who continue even if they fail it, but it counts towards exemption and bonus points.

  3. 03

    Final Exam

On the whole course: at least four dates in the summer exam period, three chances (the last with an oral part). Bonus points earned on your tests are added.

  4. 04

    Exemption

On BMC I's General Medicine track, averaging 70% on your six best tests of eight, with none below 30% and at most three missed seminars a semester, exempts you from the Final Exam.

Pharmacy and Public Health45%45%

Pass marks and exemption averages from the BMC I orientation slides (2026/27) and the academic programmes for each track. An absence from a test counts as 0%.

From the BMC to year 1

The Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy pages each give two ways into the first year: the entrance exam, 'or successful completion of the Basic Medicine Course at the University of Debrecen'. Students who complete the course are 'directly admitted to their chosen program', with no second entrance exam.

Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy all start in September. A BMC I student finishing in June, or a BMC II student finishing in July, starts year 1 that September.

The course can be repeated, but a repeater must pass the first semester or their studies end. Debrecen does not publish how many BMC students progress.

Questions

Do I need the Basic Medicine Course?

Not if the entrance exam admits you to the first year. You need it if the committee's result is 'admitted to Basic Medicine Course', or if you choose it because your Biology, Physics and Chemistry are not yet at the level Debrecen asks for. Debrecen recommends it to students without 'sufficient knowledge' of the three sciences from school.

Can you go from BMC to Medicine?

Yes. The Medicine page names 'successful completion of the Basic Medicine Course at the University of Debrecen' as an alternative to the entrance exam, and students who complete it are directly admitted to their chosen programme. Completing it means being exempted on your test scores or passing the Final Exam; on the General Medicine track a pass is 60%.

Is the BMC the same as a foundation year?

It is a foundation programme, but not Debrecen's International Foundation Year. That one is a nine-month course (6,000 USD) leading to engineering, IT, agriculture or business. The BMC belongs to the Faculty of Medicine, needs the medical entrance exam and leads to Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy. BMC School Budapest is different again: a separate tutoring group whose course Debrecen's site says is organised under its supervision.

Is there a January intake?

Yes, BMC II, the Intensive Basic Medicine Course, from January to July. Applications for the January/February 2027 intake close on 1 November 2026. Medicine itself starts only in September.
