Debrecen entrance exam scoring: pass mark, marking and guessing

Checked against the University of Debrecen's official pages on 26 October 2026. The University of Debrecen has not published its 2027/28 exam dates or fees yet; the fees quoted are for students admitted for 2026/27.

The University of Debrecen says plainly that it does not share exam scores. Its entrance-exam page says 'the overall exam performance is taken into consideration and the scores of different parts of the exam are for internal use only and not to be communicated to the applicants'. This page sets out what is published, what is not, and what follows from it for guessing and for your target.

In short

  • Debrecen judges your overall performance in the written test and the oral exam. It does not tell candidates the score of any part.
  • No mark per question, no rule for wrong answers and no pass mark appears on Debrecen's admission pages.
  • The result is one of three: admitted to the first year, admitted to the Basic Medicine Course, or rejected. In some cases the committee offers a different programme.
  • With five options, a blind guess pays as long as a wrong answer costs less than a quarter of the mark for a right one. Ruling out options makes a guess worth more.

What Debrecen publishes about marking

What the official pages and samples show
Multiple-choice questions20 per subject paper, five options (A to E), one correct, marked on a score sheet
Marks per questionNot printed on the sample tests and not published
Wrong or blank answersNo rule published
Written tasksOn each sample paper: Section I.A 5 points, I.B 5 points, II.A 10 points, II.B 10 points, so 30 in all
How the parts combineNot published: 'the overall exam performance is taken into consideration'
Your own scores'For internal use only and not to be communicated to the applicants'

The point labels are those of Debrecen's sample tests. Debrecen does not say the real papers use the same split.

The possible results

The entrance-exam page lists the outcomes of the exam. The FAQ adds that the decision is announced right after the oral exam, with your Letter of Acceptance.

  • Admitted to the first year of the programme you applied for.
  • Admitted to the Basic Medicine Course, Debrecen's preparatory programme. Completing it is the other route into Medicine named on the Medicine programme page.
  • Rejected.
  • 'In certain cases the exam committee can offer acceptance to a different study program.'

Should you guess?

Debrecen publishes no rule for wrong answers. Assume, as IvyTest's practice does, one mark for a correct answer, and call the unknown deduction for a wrong one p. With five options, a blind guess is right one time in five, so on average it is worth 1/5 − 4/5 × p marks. A blank is worth 0. The guess is better as long as p is less than 1/4.

Ruling out options changes the sum. With four options left a guess is worth 1/4 − 3/4 × p, positive for any p below 1/3. With three left it is worth 1/3 − 2/3 × p, positive for any p below 1/2. If wrong answers cost nothing, every guess is worth more than a blank.

What a guess is worth on average, in marks, with one mark for a correct answer

If a wrong answer costsBlind guess (5 options)One option ruled outTwo ruled out
0 (no penalty)+0.20+0.25+0.33
0.25 marks0+0.06+0.17
0.5 marks−0.20−0.130

The deductions in the table are examples to show the arithmetic, not Debrecen's rule. One mark per correct answer is IvyTest's assumption; Debrecen publishes no mark per question.

Is there a pass mark?

None is published. Debrecen's entrance-exam page, its FAQ, the Application and admission page and the Medicine programme page, read on 26 October 2026, give no pass mark, minimum score or seat count.

If you meet a minimum score quoted elsewhere, such as '260 points' for Medicine, it is not on any of those pages, and it sits badly beside Debrecen's statement that part scores are internal. Do not plan around it.

Other tests do not replace the exam: the FAQ says taking an exam 'such as SAT does not exempt you from taking our entrance exam/interview'.

What to aim for

With no number to aim at, aim to be solid everywhere the exam looks: the multiple-choice questions, the written tasks and the oral, in both of your subjects. On the samples the written tasks carry 30 labelled points per paper, and the oral examines the same subjects again, aloud. Since Debrecen judges overall performance, a weak spot in any part counts against you.

Questions

What is the pass mark for the Debrecen entrance exam?

Debrecen publishes none. Its entrance-exam page says the overall exam performance is considered and the scores of the parts are for internal use only. No minimum score appears on any of its admission pages.

Is there negative marking in the Debrecen entrance exam?

Debrecen does not say. It publishes no mark per question and no rule for wrong answers. If wrong answers cost nothing, a guess is always worth more than a blank; even with a penalty, a blind five-option guess pays as long as it is under a quarter of a mark.

Will I see my Debrecen exam score?

No. The entrance-exam page says the scores of different parts of the exam are 'not to be communicated to the applicants'. You receive the decision: admitted, admitted to the Basic Medicine Course, or rejected.

What does 'admitted to the Basic Medicine Course' mean?

It is one of the three possible results. The Basic Medicine Course is Debrecen's preparatory programme in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and completing it is the other route into Medicine named on the Medicine programme page.
