The University of Debrecen has no single exam day. Once your application is complete, your exam date is set by email with you or your representative. You sit in Debrecen, at a sitting abroad hosted by a representative, or online if you cannot travel. Debrecen has not published any 2027 exam dates, and its FAQ encourages applying as early as you can. This page sets out everything it has published, from the deadline to the result.

Medicine itself starts in September (Medicine programme page). For a medical applicant, a January start is the Basic Medicine Course II, a one-semester preparatory course (January to July) listed on the fees page.

The FAQ gives a different, undated list: 15 June for 'September intake all other programs' and 1 November for the January Basic Medicine Course. The Application and admission page names the 2027 intakes and gives 15 May 2027, so plan on 15 May.

How you get an exam date

    Apply online

    Submit the application on Debrecen's online platform with your documents and the USD 150 application fee. Debrecen does not consider incomplete applications.

  2. 02

    Wait for the coordinator

    Once the application is complete, an admission coordinator contacts you or your representative 'within a few days'.

  3. 03

    Agree the date by email

    The date of the exam is set by email with you or your representative. If you apply through a representative, the venue, starting time and fees of a sitting abroad come from them.

    Pay the exam fee

    The entrance exam fee is USD 350, by bank transfer, or to your representative if you applied through one. It is refunded only if you cancel your registration at least one week before the exam.

If you cannot travel to Hungary or to an exam site abroad, the FAQ says 'an online exam is possible', usually on Zoom or Skype, and that 'the online exam schedule may be different'.

The entrance-exam page embeds a public calendar of 'Entrance exam dates for medical programs'. Its entries up to May 2024 include online exams and exams in Debrecen; every entry since then is a sitting abroad. These are the ones for the 2025/26 cycle, the latest listed.

No sitting after 5 June 2026 was listed on 26 October 2026. Debrecen 'reserves the right to cancel the exam in case of insufficient number of applicants'.

For Stipendium Hungaricum applicants these dates do not apply: Debrecen contacts them about scholarship exam dates after country nomination and a check of the application.

After the exam: result, payment and deferral

  • The result is one of three: admitted to the first year, admitted to the Basic Medicine Course (a preparatory programme), or rejected. In some cases the committee offers a place on a different programme.
  • The decision comes right after the oral exam, with the Letter of Acceptance. The FAQ also says the result is announced within 1-2 days of the exam.
  • To secure your place, pay the seat reservation fee set in your Letter of Acceptance by its deadline. If you need a visa, you pay the full tuition first; the visa documents are sent once it arrives.
  • In the medical programmes you can ask to defer for up to a year only within one month of the entrance exam, and you pay the seat reservation fee. If you do not register in time, you need to pass a new entrance exam.

What is the Debrecen application deadline for 2027?
