The Debrecen oral exam (the interview)
Checked against the University of Debrecen's official pages on 26 October 2026. The University of Debrecen has not published its 2027/28 exam dates or fees yet; the fees quoted are for students admitted for 2026/27.
Key figures
- subjects: Biology and your Chemistry or Physics
- 2
- each candidate before an exam committee
- One by one
- the Medicine page says English is assessed at the exam
- In English
- the oral: the decision, with the Letter of Acceptance
- Right after
The written test is only the first part of the University of Debrecen's entrance exam. An oral exam follows, in Biology and in the second subject you chose, Chemistry or Physics. You answer an exam committee, one candidate at a time, in English, and the decision is announced right after. This page sets out what Debrecen says about the oral, what it does not say, and how to prepare.
In short
- The oral is in Biology and in Physics or Chemistry, the same two subjects as your written test.
- 'Students are interviewed one by one by an exam committee', per the FAQ.
- Debrecen judges your overall performance across the written test and the oral, and does not share the score of either.
- The decision is announced right after the oral exam, with your Letter of Acceptance.
What Debrecen says about the oral
The entrance-exam page says the exam consists of two parts, a written test and 'an oral exam in Biology and Physics or Chemistry'. The FAQ describes the oral part in two sentences: 'students are interviewed one by one by an exam committee. The decision is announced right after the oral exam, and you will receive your Letter of Acceptance.'
The Medicine programme page lists its language requirement as 'English language proficiency (assessed at the compulsory entrance examination)'. So expect science questions, answered aloud in English, in front of an exam committee.
What Debrecen does not publish
- A list of oral questions, or how many you will be asked.
- How long the oral lasts.
- How much the oral counts against the written test. The entrance-exam page says only that 'the overall exam performance is taken into consideration'.
- Whether the medical oral asks about motivation. The motivation questions the entrance-exam page describes are for bachelor and master interviews and for transfer students, not for the medical exam.
How to prepare
These are IvyTest's suggestions, built on what Debrecen publishes.
01
Explain every topic aloud
Take each line of Debrecen's topic list for your two subjects and explain it aloud in two or three minutes, in English, without notes. Where you stall is what to revise.
02
Use the right terms
Say the English name of every structure, process and law you would write in the written tasks. An examiner hears a vague word as vague knowledge.
03
Draw while you talk
Many topics are easier to explain with a sketch: a cell, a nephron, a pedigree, a free-body diagram, a structural formula. Practise drawing as you explain.
04
Work a calculation aloud
Practise setting up a calculation step by step and saying why, as you would in a genetics cross, a gas-law problem or a circuit.
05
Rehearse with follow-up questions
Ask someone to stop you and ask 'why?' or 'what if?'. The committee can ask more than your first answer covers.
On the day
- Dress: the FAQ says 'business casual is fine'.
- Documents: the Application and admission page says the originals of the document certifying your highest completed level of education, and of your passport, should be presented at the oral exam or at registration at the latest.
- Online: if you cannot travel to Hungary or to an exam site abroad, the FAQ says an online exam is possible, usually on Zoom or Skype.
- The result: admitted to the first year, admitted to the Basic Medicine Course, or rejected. In some cases the committee offers a place on a different programme.
