The programme

What MEDTEC School is

MEDTEC School is Humanitas University's single-cycle degree in Medicine and Surgery (class LM-41) 'with an integrated path in biomedical engineering' (classes L-8 and L-9), run with Politecnico di Milano under an agreement between the two universities. It qualifies you as a doctor exactly as Humanitas's other Medicine degree does, and it is taught entirely in English.

The engineering is not an add-on at the end. The degree has a core of 360 credits, like any Italian medical degree, plus 30 extra credits in a path approved by Politecnico di Milano: 390 in all over six years. Complete the 360 + 30 and Politecnico awards a Bachelor's degree (laurea triennale) in Biomedical Engineering as well, straight after Humanitas awards the degree in Medicine and Surgery.

Politecnico launched the programme with Humanitas in 2019. Its first students graduated in July 2025, the first in Europe, Politecnico says, with that double degree, and 389 students had enrolled by then. Times Higher Education ranks Humanitas University joint 267th in the world in its World University Rankings 2027.

Programme structure

The study plan, year by year, and what is taught where

In each of the first three years the first semester is taught at Politecnico di Milano, on its Milano Leonardo campus, and the second at Humanitas in Pieve Emanuele, so medicine and engineering run side by side from the start. Years 4 to 6, mostly clinical, are taught at Humanitas, with at least one engineering course every year, teachers from both universities in the same courses, and an engineering tutor beside the clinical tutor in some clinical training. Practical training also uses Humanitas's Simulation Center.

MEDTEC School: main courses by year (Humanitas's study plan)

YearMain courses (exams)
1Fundamentals of Experimental Physics; Chemistry and Organic Chemistry; Mathematics; Cell Biology, Embryology and Histology; Regional Anatomy and Gross Neuroanatomy; Cell Physiology and Biochemistry I; Professionalism, Bioethics and History of Medicine
2Statistics; Automation and Mechatronics; Computer Science; Basics of Circuit Theory; Physiology, Anatomy and Biochemistry II; Bioelectric Signal Processing and Modelling; Molecular and Computational Biology and Medical Genetics
3Biomedical Electronics and Instrumentation; Biomechanics and Thermodynamics; Biocompatibility and Biomaterials; Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology; Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
4Organ System Diseases I–III; Public Health; Healthcare Management; Pharmacology; Patient-Specific Modelling and Technologies for Artificial Organs
5Molecular Oncology; Neurosciences and Mental Health; Advanced Imaging and Diagnostics; Head and Neck Diseases; Dermatology, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology; Bone and Joint and Technologies in Rehabilitation; Doctor-Patient Communication
6Patient Management; Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Healthcare Robotics and Active Ageing; Emergency and Life Support; Legal Medicine and Bioethics; electives and thesis

Professional training runs through all six years and grows towards the end: 15 credits of professional activity in the sixth year alone. The thesis is meant to apply both sides of the degree, and can be done at Humanitas or at an affiliated institution.

Admission

The admission test: the HUMAT, with MEDTEC's own weights

There is no separate MEDTEC test. You sit the HUMAT, Humanitas's admission test: 60 questions in 120 minutes, in three sections, Scientific Thinking and Academic Literacy, Biology and Chemistry, and Mathematics and Physics. If you register for both courses, one sitting puts you on two separate rankings, one for Medicine and one for MEDTEC, and each scores the same answers differently.

MEDTEC turns Medicine's weights around: Mathematics and Physics are worth the most, Scientific Thinking and Academic Literacy the least. Each section has its own minimum, and falling below any one of them keeps you off the MEDTEC ranking. Ties go to the better Mathematics and Physics score, then Biology and Chemistry, then the younger candidate. Of your sittings in a calendar year, the higher score counts.

HUMAT points per answer, MEDTEC School and Medicine (2026/27 call, Table 3)

SectionMEDTEC: correct / wrong (max, minimum)Medicine: correct / wrong (max, minimum)
Scientific Thinking, Academic Literacy (20 questions)+10 / −2.5 (200, at least 40)+22 / −5.5 (440, at least 88)
Biology, Chemistry (20 questions)+16 / −4 (320, at least 64)+16 / −4 (320, at least 64)
Mathematics, Physics (20 questions)+22 / −5.5 (440, at least 88)+10 / −2.5 (200, at least 40)

A blank scores 0 in every section, and the maximum is 960 on both lists. In the 2026 MEDTEC ranking, read on 17 October 2026, the last EU candidate admitted was in position 260 with 347.5/960, and the 90 admitted averaged 546.8; on the non-EU list the last candidate enrolled was in position 122 with 533.5.

The 2026/27 tests were held online on 5–6 March and on 18 and 20 March 2026. The 2027/28 call is not yet published: Humanitas says its Medicine and Surgery call usually comes out in October. The calls let students in the penultimate year of school sit the test too, with their score counting for the following year, although the MEDTEC page still says only final-year students and graduates may sit it.

Places

Places

The MEDTEC page gives 130 places a year: 90 for EU students and 40 for non-EU students, the figures in the ministry's allocation for 2026/27. The 2026/27 EU call had printed 80 EU places, subject to that decree. Non-EU citizens not resident in Italy apply under their own call and ranking.

Fees

Fees

MEDTEC costs the same as Humanitas Medicine. For EU students the yearly fee depends on the family's ISEP, Humanitas's own index of income and assets; non-EU students pay the top band. The fee covers the course only, not housing, food or books.

MEDTEC School: yearly tuition by ISEP band

ISEP (thousands of euros)Tuition a year
Under 30€10,206
30 to 55€15,206
55 to 80€19,206
Over 80, and non-EU students€23,206

Scholarships

Scholarships

Humanitas's merit scholarships are tuition waivers, set separately for MEDTEC. For 2026/27, for EU citizens resident in Italy, one full scholarship funded by Fondazione Rocca (€10,000 to €23,000, ISEE 2026 under €50,000) and three partial ones that bring tuition down to €5,206 (the page announces six and lists these four); for EU citizens not resident in Italy, two partial ones; for non-EU students, two of €18,000 a year.

EU candidates need to rank in the top 20 of the MEDTEC list and to have a school average of at least 8/10 in the two years before the final one; non-EU candidates need to rank in the top 10 of the non-EU list. The scholarship renews each year with a weighted average of 27/30 or more and the required credits. In 2026 the request was due by 8 April.

Open day

Open day and campus visits

Humanitas's next Open Day for Medicine and Surgery and MEDTEC School is on 23 January 2027 in Pieve Emanuele, with programme presentations, a tour of the campus and the Simulation Center, and talks with doctors, academics and alumni. Registration opens on 14 December 2026. Outside the open day, Student Ambassadors lead one-hour campus tours on set dates.

Who it suits

Who MEDTEC suits, and what comes after

MEDTEC suits a candidate who wants to practise medicine and is also drawn to the mathematics, physics and engineering behind medical technology: the first three years carry real engineering courses, and the admission ranking rewards Mathematics and Physics more than any other section. A candidate whose strength is reasoning and reading may do better on the Medicine ranking, which weighs those most.

Graduates are doctors with the same access to specialisation as any LM-41 graduate. Politecnico names the medical profession and research, and industries working on biomedical devices and technologies or in pharmaceuticals, as where they can work.
