Medicine or MEDTEC: one HUMAT, two rankings
Checked against Humanitas's official documents on 18 October 2026. The 2027/28 call is not out yet; figures are from 2026/27.
Key figures
- test for both programmes
- 1
- Medicine and Surgery places a year
- 200
- MEDTEC School places a year
- 130
- points per answer swapped between two sections
- 22 ↔ 10
Humanitas admits to Medicine and Surgery and to MEDTEC School, its medicine and biomedical engineering degree with Politecnico di Milano, through the same HUMAT. When you register you choose one or both, and the same answers are then scored twice, with opposite weights on reasoning and on mathematics and physics.
In short
- One test, one fee, one sitting per round. You choose Medicine and Surgery, MEDTEC or both when you register, and appear on each ranking you chose.
- Medicine weights Scientific Thinking & Academic Literacy most (+22 a question) and Mathematics & Physics least (+10). MEDTEC does the opposite. Biology & Chemistry is +16 on both.
- Places a year, by the programme pages: 150 EU and 50 non-EU for Medicine, 90 EU and 40 non-EU for MEDTEC, each group ranked separately.
- MEDTEC is a six-year Medicine and Surgery degree that also leads to a Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.
- Scores on the two rankings are computed differently, so a MEDTEC score and a Medicine score are not directly comparable.
The same answers, weighted two ways
Both rankings use the same 60 answers and the same 960-point maximum. What changes is how much each section is worth, and therefore which section's minimum is the demanding one.
| Section | Medicine: per correct | Medicine: minimum | MEDTEC: per correct | MEDTEC: minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scientific Thinking & Academic Literacy | +22 | 88 of 440 | +10 | 40 of 200 |
| Biology & Chemistry | +16 | 64 of 320 | +16 | 64 of 320 |
| Mathematics & Physics | +10 | 40 of 200 | +22 | 88 of 440 |
| First tie-break | Scientific Thinking & Academic Literacy | Mathematics & Physics |
A wrong answer costs a quarter of the section's value on each ranking. Tables 2 and 3 of the 2026/27 call; after the first tie-break both look at Biology & Chemistry, then prefer the younger candidate.
Places on each programme
| Programme | EU and EU-equated | Non-EU | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medicine and Surgery | 150 | 50 | 200 |
| MEDTEC School | 90 | 40 | 130 |
As the programme pages give them, "annually available" for MEDTEC. The 2026/27 calls had set 80 EU and 20 non-EU MEDTEC places, subject to the Ministry's decree, which can confirm, raise or lower the places in a call.
Non-EU means a non-EU citizen not resident in Italy. Several groups of non-EU citizens, such as those with certain Italian residence permits, count as EU-equated; Article 2 of the call lists them.
The 2026 lists side by side
The first lists under today's format came out on 30 March 2026, and have moved since as candidates turned places down. Read on 17 October 2026, they looked like this.
| List | Entries | Below a minimum | First round stopped near | Lowest score admitted or registered | At position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medicine, EU | 1,085 | 483 | 592.5–593 (estimated, 150th) | 450 | 354 |
| Medicine, non-EU | 747 | 244 | 742.5 (50th) | 640 | 118 |
| MEDTEC, EU | 521 | 196 | 616–621 (estimated, 80th) | 347.5 | 260 |
| MEDTEC, non-EU | 332 | 99 | 832.5 (20th) | 533.5 | 122 |
Aggregates of the published lists from the Humanitas research article. "Below a minimum" counts entries marked Rejected; "first round" is the score around the last place in the original allocation (150, 50, 80 and 20 places in the 2026/27 calls), reconstructed where the list hides it. The lowest score is the lowest among entries marked Admitted or Registered on 17 October 2026: an observed cut-off that can still move, not an official one.
Medicine scores and MEDTEC scores come from different weights, so 450 and 347.5 are not the same bar measured twice. A candidate on both lists has two different totals.
Which to choose, and whether to choose both
The weights decide more than most candidates expect. A candidate whose strength is reading and reasoning gains on the Medicine ranking; one whose strength is mathematics and physics gains on MEDTEC, and has an easier time with Medicine's 40-point minimum in that section but a harder one with MEDTEC's 88.
Because the call lets you register for one or both programmes in the same application, and you then appear on each ranking you chose, putting down both keeps two lists open from one test. The choice that matters is the degree: decide whether you want the engineering track before you would accept a MEDTEC place.
- Medicine and Surgery: six years, taught in English, 360 CFU, with clinical clerkships from the third year.
- MEDTEC School: six years of Medicine and Surgery, taught in English with Politecnico di Milano, adding engineering subjects (mathematical analysis, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanics) and extra credits, and leading also to a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.
Questions
Can I apply to both Medicine and MEDTEC at Humanitas?
Yes. You sit the HUMAT once per round and say at registration whether you are competing for Medicine and Surgery, MEDTEC School or both; with both, you appear on both rankings.
Is MEDTEC easier to get into than Medicine at Humanitas?
Not in a way one number shows. MEDTEC had fewer entries in 2026 (521 EU against 1,085 for Medicine) and fewer places, and its scores are computed with different weights. On 17 October 2026 the lowest score admitted or registered was 347.5 on the EU MEDTEC list and 450 on the EU Medicine list, but those totals are not on the same scale.
How is the HUMAT scored differently for MEDTEC?
MEDTEC gives +22 per correct answer in Mathematics & Physics and +10 in Scientific Thinking & Academic Literacy, the reverse of Medicine; Biology & Chemistry is +16 on both. Its section minimums are 40, 64 and 88, and its first tie-break is Mathematics & Physics.
What degree does Humanitas MEDTEC give?
A six-year degree in Medicine and Surgery, run with Politecnico di Milano, which with the additional credits also leads to a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.
How many places does Humanitas MEDTEC have?
130 a year by the MEDTEC page: 90 for EU and EU-equated candidates and 40 for non-EU candidates, ranked separately. The 2026/27 calls had set 80 and 20, subject to the Ministry's decree.
