Semmelweis's written tests are taken online, on your own computer at home, through the university's Moodle. That makes the day easier to reach and stricter to set up: Safe Exam Browser on a single display, a Zoom call with camera and microphone on throughout, and nobody else in the room. This page sets out the rules as Semmelweis publishes them, and a checklist for the setup.

In short

  • The four tests (Medical Biology, Medical Chemistry, General English, Biomedical English) run on Moodle and open only in Safe Exam Browser, with at most one display.
  • You stay alone in a room, connected to a Zoom video conference with your web camera and microphone on at all times.
  • Questions come one at a time, in order. You can change an answer until you move on, leave a question blank, but never go back.
  • Each test has 20 minutes and submits itself when they run out; a calculator is allowed in Medical Chemistry only.

Semmelweis sends the final details in an invitation letter about a week before the exam, and asks candidates to prepare the hardware and software setup before the written test.

A setup checklist

IvyTest's suggestions, from the rules above. Do them before the invitation letter arrives, not on the day.

  1. 01

    Use a laptop or desktop

Safe Exam Browser is installed on a laptop or desktop computer. Install it from the Moodle page of the tests and make sure it starts.

  2. 02

    One screen only

Disconnect any second monitor before the exam: Safe Exam Browser runs with one display, internal or external.

  3. 03

    Try the sample test

The sample test on Semmelweis's Moodle also opens only in Safe Exam Browser, so it checks your setup and shows you the interface. The logins are on the entrance-exam page.

  4. 04

    Test Zoom

Camera and microphone stay on for the whole exam. Check both before the day, and follow the invitation letter's instructions for joining.

  5. 05

    Prepare the room

A room where you can be alone for the whole exam, with a stable connection and nothing that will interrupt you.

  6. 06

    Have a calculator ready

For Medical Chemistry only. Practise with the one you will use.

Pacing four separate clocks

The 80 minutes are four blocks of 20 that do not share time. Finishing Medical Biology early saves you nothing for Medical Chemistry, so each test needs its own pace: about a minute a question.

Because you cannot return to a question, answer each one as you meet it. If a question is not coming, decide quickly whether to guess or leave it blank, and move on: the time you spend on it comes out of the questions after it.

If you cannot sit on the day

Under the 2026/27 Admission Rules, you can withdraw from an exam you registered for only before that exam's registration deadline. If you are registered and do not attend, it is not a withdrawal: it counts as an exam sat with no valid result, and it uses one of your two attempts for the calendar year.

Questions

No. Safe Exam Browser can only be run with up to one display, internal or external.

Can I use a calculator in the Semmelweis exam?

Only in the Medical Chemistry test.

Can I go back to a question in the Semmelweis online test?

No. You can change your answer until you go to the next question; after that you cannot return to any earlier question, whether you answered it or not.

Practise in the real format
