Fees

SFU medicine fees: tuition per semester and in total

Medicine at SFU Vienna is two degree programmes with the same fee: the Bachelor in Human Medicine (6 semesters) and the Master in Human Medicine (6 semesters). Both cost €14,179 a semester, the Bachelor rate applying "from winter semester 2026". SFU states no rate for later years, so the total below is IvyTest's arithmetic at today's rates, not a promise by the university.

You can pay per semester (due 5 working days after the invoice), in 6 monthly instalments (2% fee), in two quarterly instalments a semester (1%) or yearly in September with 1% off. Through a scholarship programme with the Vienna Healthcare Group (WIGEV), SFU covers the full Bachelor and Master tuition for 10 Human Medicine students, who in return finish in the minimum time, train as specialists at WIGEV and then work there for five more years (12 years in all). It requires financial need: a gross family income of at most €50,000 with one parent liable for support, €60,000 with two, plus €12,000 for each further child. For 2026/27 applications ran from 7 January to 20 May 2026.

Structure

Bachelor and Master: how the degree is built

At SFU the route to practising medicine runs through two degrees. The Bachelor in Human Medicine takes 3 years (180 ECTS) and ends with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences (BScMed). The Master in Human Medicine takes another 3 years (180 ECTS) and ends with the Dr. med. univ., the basis for specialist or general-practice training. Teaching is in German, in Vienna.

Progression is set out in SFU's rules: graduates of SFU's Bachelor in the Human Medicine track enter the Master "without a further admission procedure". Graduates of the Dentistry track or of other universities get in only if places are free and equivalence is shown. You choose the track in the online application, and cannot switch during the Bachelor.

The Master is clinical: 23 weeks of clerkships in its first two years, plus electives (Famulaturen) and the clinical-practical year (KPJ) in semesters 5 and 6. Clerkships run at partner hospitals: the Vienna Healthcare Group (Klinik Favoriten, Floridsdorf, Hietzing, Landstraße, Ottakring and Penzing), the Barmherzige Brüder hospital in Vienna, Vinzenz Gruppe hospitals (Göttlicher Heiland, Barmherzige Schwestern, Orthopädisches Spital Speising, St. Josef) and the AUVA trauma centre in Meidling.

  • Master year 1: 7 weeks of clerkships, among them surgery, dermatology, gynaecology, ENT, internal medicine, ophthalmology, radiology and urology.
  • Master year 2: 16 weeks, among them anaesthesia, neurology, orthopaedics and trauma surgery, paediatrics, pathology and psychiatry, plus a 10-week clerkship in internal medicine or surgery.
  • The Master thesis is presented at the faculty's Science Day.

Curriculum

The Bachelor curriculum, semester by semester

The Bachelor is built from modules (preclinical and clinical basics) and skills lines that run through all six semesters: evidence-based medicine and public health, professional competence and early patient contact, including compulsory paramedic training. The Bachelor thesis is assembled from the work of the evidence-based medicine line.

Application

Applying to SFU medicine: steps, documents and deadline

For 2026/27 the online application ran from 7 January to 10 August 2026; the 2027/28 window is not published yet. You may take part in the admission procedure once a year. The steps:

  • Online application, choosing the track (Human Medicine or Dentistry), every document as a PDF.
  • Documents: school-leaving certificate (may follow by the start of studies), the last two annual school reports, ID, proof of 4 weekly hours of upper-secondary Biology, a Europass CV with evidence, and the study-specific task.
  • German at C1: not needed for native speakers with Austrian, German or Swiss citizenship or with German in the Matura or Abitur; otherwise ÖSD C1, telc C1 Hochschule, Goethe C1, DSH 3, DSD II, TestDaF (TDN 4) or the University of Vienna language centre at C1/2. Very good English as well.
  • Submitting the application makes the €700 fee due; only then are you assigned a test day by email, and that day is binding.
  • Test day in Vienna (cognitive abilities test and Biology), then a Zoom interview for everyone who passed the cognitive test.
  • An offer comes with the training contract, to be signed within 14 days. Enrolment is in person in July or August.

Dates

SFU medicine dates: testing blocks and results

In 2026 there were three testing blocks: 23 to 27 March and 7 to 10 April, 8 to 19 June and 8 to 9 July, 10 to 14 August. Places go out after each block: in Human Medicine 155 after the first, 50 after the second and 15 after the third. The 2027 dates are not set yet; the admission test guide will be updated as soon as SFU publishes them.

Experiences

What the SFU test day actually is

IvyTest cannot verify personal accounts, so there are none here. What SFU itself says: the cognitive test and the Biology check run on one day on SFU's computers at Freudplatz, the day's schedule arrives by email a week before, and individual results are not disclosed. The guide walks through the test day, and the practice sets cover both parts of the test.

Student life

Living in Vienna as a medical student

Sigmund Freud University's medical campus is in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district. Its Bachelor and Master stages are priced and billed separately, both by semester, so budget for both stages of the programme rather than one flat annual figure.

FAQ

Sigmund Freud University admissions FAQ

Yes. The programme and the admission test are both in German, and SFU requires German at C1 level.

No. The MedAT is Austria's public-university entrance test. The private universities in our catalogue each run their own separate admission test, with different subjects, timing and format from the MedAT and from each other.

Yes, at all three. The written test comes first, then an interview for candidates who pass it or, at Paracelsus, who rank among the top 405 nationally. Format varies by school: Danube's interview, for example, has an MMI part followed by a medicine and natural-sciences part.

No national licensing exam. Austria's pathway runs through registration and supervised training: a general Basisausbildung period, then either a roughly three-year general-practice track or a five-to-six-year specialist track, administered through the Austrian Medical Chamber, ending in the right to practise.

Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules Sigmund Freud University has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.
