Location

Where is the Medical University of Lodz?

In Łódź, in central Poland: "in the heart of Poland", as the university puts it. Most international students fly into Warsaw Chopin airport and take the train; by MUL's Student Guide, trains between Warsaw and Łódź run about every hour and take about 1.5 hours, and coaches 1.5 to 2 hours. Łódź is one of Poland's large academic cities, with 19 higher education institutions and more than 70,000 students, about 5,000 of them from abroad (MUL's FAQ).

The campus is not in one place. The Admission Office and the Administrative Centre for Studies in English are in Building U1 at 253 Pomorska Street, on the campus of the Clinical and Didactic Centre (CKD), "the heart of medical education and clinical training". MUL's campus page also lists the Medical Simulation Centre, dormitories, the Information and Library Centre, the BRaIN and MediHub research centres and a Sports Centre, and the university's administration is at 4 Kościuszki Avenue. Clinical teaching takes place in the university's three hospitals, with over 1,600 beds: the Barlicki University Hospital No. 1 (22 Kopcińskiego Street), the Central Veteran Hospital (113 Żeromskiego Street) and the Central Teaching Hospital (251 Pomorska Street), plus 34 wards in the city's hospitals.

The Medical University of Lodz (MUL, or UMED) is a different university from the University of Lodz and the Lodz University of Technology. Its "Virtual University" is not an application site: it is the system enrolled students use for grades and timetables, at wu.umed.lodz.pl.

MUL offers no scholarships: studies in English are "commercial and fully paid". For living costs, its Student Guide gives PLN 1,300-2,000 a month for a studio and PLN 700-1,000 for a room in a shared flat; the university has a limited number of places in shared double rooms in its dormitories.

Rankings

Medical University of Lodz world ranking

In THE's own World University Rankings 2027 table, MUL is in the 801–1000 band, second among Poland's medical universities after Wroclaw Medical University (451–500); Gdańsk and Warsaw are in the 1001–1200 band. MUL's Accreditation and rankings page quotes more tables (ShanghaiRanking's subject rankings, CWUR, Perspektywy, U.S. News for Clinical Medicine), which IvyTest has not checked on those rankings' own sites. Is it good? A university-wide ranking says little about one programme: the clinical teaching in its own hospitals, the curriculum below and the degree's recognition (automatic in the EU, and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG Sponsor Note, by MUL's page) are better guides.

English Division

The English Division and the Faculty of Medicine

Studies in English began in 2003 with 8 students from the USA and Canada. Today the English Division, part of the Faculty of Medicine under a Vice-Dean for Studies in English, teaches two degrees entirely in English: the 6-year MD in Medicine (6MD, the Polish lekarz degree, known in India as MBBS) and the 5-year DMD in Dentistry. It also runs a PREMED preparatory course and PhD programmes. MUL's pages give about 850 foreign students from 67 countries (About MUL) and more than 100 new students a year (About English Division). The Faculty of Health Sciences (Public Health, Dietetics, Emergency Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery) and the Faculty of Pharmacy teach in Polish.

Entry requirements

Medical University of Lodz entry requirements

You need a secondary school leaving certificate that gives access to university in your country (MUL names three A-levels, two of them sciences, the IB and the EB) with results in two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Admission then runs in two stages. First, your grades in those two subjects are converted into qualification points with MUL's tables for each country, out of 200, and only candidates above the threshold the admission committee sets for the year are invited to the exam. Second, the entrance exam: a 30-minute oral on Microsoft Teams, 12 questions, 18 of 32 to pass. Passes are listed in order of exam result within the admission limit.

Holders of the IB, the EB or the Polish Matura whose documents the committee approves, and graduates of MUL's PREMED course with an average of 4.0 or more, are exempt from the exam's science part and answer only its four general questions. Predicted or mid-year grades are accepted, there is no age limit, MUL takes no transfers and does not defer a place. A B2 English certificate from MUL's list is needed unless you are an EU, EFTA, Swiss or UK citizen schooled in the IB, EB, OECD, EFTA, Chinese or Ukrainian system. To complete admission you hand in the originals: diploma and transcript with an apostille or legalisation and a Polish sworn translation, NAWA recognition where your certificate needs it, criminal record certificates, a hepatitis B antibody test done in Poland, your passport and two photographs.

The path to admission at the Medical University of Lodz: apply online and choose 2 sciences (€24 fee); school grades in those sciences converted to points against the year's threshold; an emailed invitation to book the exam within 14 days; the oral exam on MS Teams, 18 of 32 to pass, result within 2 working days; the Letter of Acceptance. Exempt candidates (Polish Matura, approved IB or EB, MUL PREMED with 4.0 or more) answer only the 4 general questions and need 5 of 8

Registration

How to register and apply, step by step

Everything happens online, on MUL's registration portal (registration.umed.lodz.pl). Recruitment for 2027/28 runs from 15 January to 31 October 2027 (Senate Resolution No. 60/2026); the application deadline is not published yet, and in 2026 it was 7 September.

  • Create an account on the portal (a password of at least 8 characters) and choose the 6MD programme.
  • Fill in the application form and submit it, choosing your two exam sciences; nothing can be changed after you submit.
  • Upload your diploma or predicted grades and transcripts, English certificate, passport and photograph, and NAWA information where needed, then click "Accept All Documents".
  • Pay the €24 application fee.
  • The Admission Committee checks your documents. Within two working days of a positive check you are emailed, and you have 14 days to book an exam date in the portal ("Ms Teams Entrance Exam").
  • Sit the oral exam; the link arrives one day before, and the result by email within two working days.
  • Pass, send your final documents (and the NAWA Recognition Statement if needed), and receive the Letter of Acceptance; pay the first instalment within two weeks.

Check your spam folder: MUL's emails often land there, as its own process page warns.
