Overview
What is the Vasile Goldiș University Medicine Admission Test?
Vasile Goldiș Western University of Arad sets its own written admission test for its English-taught Medicine programme, under the Faculty of Medicine's own admission Regulation rather than any shared Romanian format. It is 60 grid-marked multiple-choice questions (40 Biology and 20 Chemistry), sat on paper, in person at Arad, in English, starting at 10:00 Romania time. It is the route for EU/EEA/Swiss and Romanian candidates: under Articles 17(3) and 41 of the Regulation, non-EU candidates are admitted without it, on an assessment of their school record and personal achievements.
Three hours for 60 questions makes this one of the most generously timed papers in IvyTest's catalogue: three minutes per question, against the two minutes a candidate gets at Titu Maiorescu, Romania's other school in this catalogue. That changes what preparation should optimise for. Speed drills matter far less here than accuracy and careful reading, because the clock is unlikely to be what costs you marks.
Two rules in Article 39 make the paper behave differently from a standard single-best-answer test. First, a question may have more than one correct answer (though never all five), so an item is not automatically a one-of-five choice. Second, a candidate who fills all five boxes has that question cancelled, which closes the obvious shotgun exploit that multi-answer marking would otherwise open. Everything else is conventional: one point for a correctly answered single-answer item, nothing for a wrong one, no negative marking anywhere.

IvyTest reviews official UVVG announcements and updates this guide when the next session is announced.
Structure
Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test format
60 questions in 180 minutes as one continuous block: three minutes per question, and one of the most generous time allowances of any medicine admission test in this catalogue. The paper is grid-marked on a single answer sheet, drawn on the morning from two prepared variants, and corrected electronically in front of you once you hand it in.
| Section | Questions | Weighting | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biology | 40 | 67% (40 of 60) | *see the note below the table |
| Chemistry (organic only) | 20 | 33% (20 of 60) | *see the note below the table |
- UVVG sets one 180-minute block for the whole paper rather than timing sections separately
Content
Question and subject breakdown
Two subjects, in a two-to-one ratio. The Biology syllabus is broad and system-by-system; the Chemistry syllabus is narrow in a way the Regulation's own one-word label does not reveal.
Biology
67%Twenty official topic headings running from the introduction to anatomy and physiology through to the female reproductive system. It is anatomy and physiology organised by system, and the official sheet deliberately splits histology from gross anatomy: bones and joints sit apart from the skeletal system, muscle tissue apart from the muscular system, nerve tissue apart from the organisation of the nervous system. Sense organs get a heading of their own, which several comparable syllabuses omit entirely.
Chemistry
33%Organic chemistry only. The Regulation's own wording is simply 'Chemistry', but the official topic list heads this area 'Organic Chemistry' and every one of its four headings is organic: structure and isomerism, the main functional-group families, carbohydrates, and the biological macromolecules including proteins, lipids, vitamins and medicines. Nothing inorganic and nothing physical-chemical appears on the published list.
Marks
Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test scoring
Two things deserve attention here, and neither is the absence of negative marking. The first is the multi-answer rule, which changes what an item can look like. The second is the grade formula, which carries ten ex officio points and therefore sets an exchange rate between raw marks and the grade that decides admission.
- Correct single-answer item
- +1 point
- Incorrect answer
- 0 points (no negative marking anywhere in the Regulation)
- Unanswered question
- 0 points
- Multi-answer items
- 0.20 points per matched box: five boxes at 0.20 each, so an item is still worth at most 1.00 point
- How many answers can be correct
- More than one is possible, but never all five, and a candidate who fills all five boxes has that question cancelled
- Maximum raw score
- 60 points (40 Biology + 20 Chemistry)
- Grade formula
- N = (points scored × 1.50 + 10) / 10, calculated to two decimal places without rounding
- What the formula implies
- Zero marks gives 1.00, the floor of Romania's scale; 60 marks gives 10.00; each single raw point is worth exactly 0.15 grade points
- Minimum eligible score
- 5.00 out of 10, 26.67 points on the formula, so 27 of 60 in practice (which gives 5.05). Below it you are not eligible regardless of rank
- Per-subject floors
- None: there is no Biology or Chemistry sub-threshold and no Romanian equivalent of the Italian OFA additional learning requirement
- Reserve questions
- None published; the Regulation describes a single 60-item paper drawn from two prepared variants and never mentions reserve or replacement items
Worked example
The IvyTest simulator scores every practice paper against these exact rules.

Full Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test syllabus
The Regulation itself carries no syllabus and defers to the topic list published by the faculty. That list, 'Tematica și bibliografia examenului de admitere', approved by the Faculty Council on 16 February 2026 for the Medicine (in English) programme, gives 20 Biology headings and 4 Organic Chemistry headings, and the groupings below follow them in the order and wording the sheet uses. The detail under each heading is IvyTest's exam-preparation expansion of an official heading, not official syllabus wording.
Twenty headings, organised by system. Note the sheet's deliberate separation of tissue-level from organ-level topics: bones and joints, muscle tissue and nerve tissue each have their own heading, distinct from the skeletal, muscular and nervous system headings that follow them.

- Digestive system: mouth, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pharynx, oesophagus and stomach, small and large intestine, liver, gallbladder and pancreas, mechanical and chemical digestion, digestive enzymes and their sources, bile and pancreatic juice, sites of nutrient absorption
- Metabolism and nutrition: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water, anabolism and catabolism, ATP and energy balance, basal metabolic rate and nutritional needs, enzymes, coenzymes and metabolic regulation, common deficiency patterns

The official topic list heads this area 'Organic Chemistry' and gives four headings, every one of them organic. Nothing inorganic and nothing physical-chemical appears on it: no atomic structure, no periodic trends, no gas laws, no equilibrium, no electrochemistry. The six groupings below split the four official headings along their own enumeration of compound classes rather than inventing new areas.
- Structure, bonding and isomerism: carbon valence and covalent bonding, sigma and pi bonds, straight, branched, cyclic, saturated, unsaturated and aromatic carbon chains, molecular, structural and condensed formulas, functional groups and the classification of organic compounds, constitutional isomers of chain, position and function, stereoisomers, cis-trans isomerism and basic chirality, elements of IUPAC naming
- Alcohols, phenols and amines: primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols with naming, oxidation, dehydration and esterification; phenols with their acidity, reaction with bases and aromatic substitution; primary, secondary and tertiary amines with basicity, ammonium salt formation and biological relevance; comparison of acidity and basicity across the three classes
- Carboxylic acids and their derivatives: carboxylic acid acidity and salts, esterification and decarboxylation, esters, amides, acid chlorides and anhydrides at recognition level, hydrolysis and condensation, acid-base behaviour of the carboxyl group
- Carbohydrates: monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides, glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose, starch, glycogen and cellulose, aldoses and ketoses, reducing and non-reducing sugars, glycosidic bonds and their hydrolysis, energy storage and structural roles
- Proteins and lipids: amino acids, the peptide bond and the levels of protein structure, denaturation and basic enzyme function, fatty acids and triglycerides, saturated and unsaturated fats, hydrolysis and saponification, comparison of proteins, fats and carbohydrates

How difficult is the Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test?
This is not a fast paper and it is not a conceptually advanced one. Its difficulty is concentrated in two places: the breadth of twenty Biology headings, and a marking rule that makes careless reading more expensive than it looks.
An item may have more than one correct answer
Article 39 permits multi-answer items: never all five correct, but more than one is possible. That removes the single-best-answer reflex most candidates bring from other admission tests: you cannot stop reading the options once you have found one that works. Multi-answer items are scored at 0.20 points per matched box, so with five boxes an item still tops out at 1.00 point, the same as a single-answer one.
Filling all five boxes cancels the question
The obvious exploit of a multi-answer paper (mark everything and collect the partial credit) is closed explicitly: a candidate who fills all five boxes has that item cancelled and scores nothing on it. Since no item ever has all five correct anyway, marking all five is never right and is always penalised.
Twenty Biology headings, with histology separated from anatomy
The official sheet splits bones and joints from the skeletal system, muscle tissue from the muscular system, and nerve tissue from the organisation of the nervous system: three pairs of headings where a single-heading syllabus would have one. It also gives sense organs a heading of its own. That is a genuinely broad Biology scope for 40 questions, and a candidate revising from a condensed anatomy summary will be short on exactly the tissue-level detail those split headings exist to test.
Chemistry is organic only, whatever the Regulation calls it
The Regulation says 'Chemistry'; the official topic list says 'Organic Chemistry' and lists only organic headings. Candidates who prepare a general chemistry syllabus spend weeks on atomic structure, periodic trends, gas laws and equilibrium that this paper has no published heading for, while the vitamins, medicines and drugs heading, which most general syllabuses skip, is one of only four.
Three hours is generous, which shifts where marks are lost
180 minutes for 60 questions is three minutes per item, roughly half again as long as most comparable papers allow. Time is very unlikely to be what costs you marks here, so preparation that optimises for speed is optimising the wrong variable. Accuracy, careful option-by-option reading and the discipline of answering every single item are what the format actually rewards.
Benchmarks
What is a good Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test score?
UVVG publishes its 5.00 pass mark, a seat count (45 for Medicine in English in 2026-2027 on the test route, beside 45 for non-EU candidates) and each session's list of admitted candidates with their grades, but no cut-offs across years and no applicant volume, so any figure quoted for the score that will secure a place in 2027 is an estimate rather than a university number. On the September 2026 list for Medicine in English, the 12 admitted EU candidates had grades from 7.99 down to 5.80.
Above the 5.00 floor, Article 18 fills places in descending order of grade among eligible candidates, which means the operative cut-off is set by that cycle's competition, not by the university in advance. The floor itself is unusually low in raw terms: the formula puts it at 26.67 points, about 44% of the paper, so 27 of 60 in practice. Treating that as a target rather than a minimum is the single most common planning error on this exam.
During preparation, convert every mock with the real formula rather than reading raw marks, because the ex officio ten points compress the scale in a way raw counting hides. A mock at 27 of 60 reads as a near-miss in raw terms and as a bare 5.05 pass in grade terms; a mock at 45 of 60 is 7.75. Tracking the converted grade over time, broken down by subject, is a more honest picture than either number alone.
Pending verification
- · Admission cut-offs from earlier years and from the August 2026 session, beyond the published 5.00 minimum (only the September 2026 list was found)
- · Applicants per session and the resulting competition ratio
- · The Annex 2 score a non-EU candidate needs on the document assessment to secure a place
- · Confirmed 2027 session dates and registration deadline
These specific numbers aren't public yet — an IvyTest simulator score is the closest benchmark you can get today.

How to prepare for the Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test
Cover twenty Biology headings properly, and keep Chemistry strictly organic
Full coverage of the official topic list, in the ratio the paper actually uses.
- Sit a full diagnostic in week one under the real 60-question, 180-minute, five-option conditions, and convert the result with N = (points × 1.50 + 10) / 10 so your baseline is a grade rather than a raw count.
- Work the Biology list as twenty separate headings rather than as a handful of systems; in particular, treat bones and joints, muscle tissue and nerve tissue as their own topics, since the official sheet separates them from the skeletal, muscular and nervous system headings on purpose.
- Keep Chemistry entirely organic. If a resource takes you into atomic structure, periodic trends, gas laws or equilibrium, it is not preparing you for this paper: the four official headings are structure and isomerism, the functional-group families, carbohydrates, and the biological macromolecules including vitamins and medicines.
- From week six, run full timed sittings that include multi-answer items, so that reading every option before committing becomes habit rather than something you remember to do.
Two-to-one towards Biology, with multi-answer practice built in
Targeted coverage matched to the 40/20 split.
- Split study time roughly 67% Biology and 33% organic Chemistry (the same ratio as the paper) rather than by which subject feels more comfortable.
- Inside Biology, prioritise the headings that can be asked at both tissue and organ level: bones and joints against the skeletal system, muscle tissue against the muscular system, nerve tissue against the organisation of the nervous system.
- Practise organic recognition over organic synthesis: naming a family from a formula, ranking acidity or basicity across alcohols, phenols and amines, and identifying a reducing sugar are the shapes these four headings actually support.
- One full timed mock a week from week two, converted to the 1-10 scale and reviewed the same day by heading rather than by overall score.
Full 180-minute sittings, answering every single box
Volume of in-format practice with the real marking rules applied.
- Two full mocks a week at the 180-minute limit. Use the whole three hours: with no negative marking and three minutes per question, an unanswered item is pure loss.
- On every mock, apply the real rules: read all five options before committing, accept that more than one may be correct, and never mark all five, since that cancels the item outright.
- Review by heading. If three wrong answers cluster under one of the twenty Biology headings, that heading is the next session regardless of what the overall grade looked like.
- Track the converted grade rather than the raw score, remembering the exchange rate: each raw point is 0.15 grade points, and ten blind guesses are worth about 2 points, or 0.30 grade points.
Clear 5.00 with margin, then build from the biggest headings
Triage against the floor, with the highest-yield Biology headings first.
- Start from the floor arithmetic: 27 of 60 gives 5.05 and makes you eligible, and nothing below 27 does. Establish where your current mocks land relative to that before choosing what to revise.
- Consolidate the Biology headings with the widest question surface (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous and endocrine) rather than adding new material.
- In Chemistry, secure the recognition-level items first: functional-group families, isomer types, the carbohydrate classes and the vitamin groups, all of which are directly askable from the official headings.
- Rehearse the logistics: in person at Arad, a 10:00 start, one of two variants drawn on the morning, and grids corrected electronically in front of you when you hand the paper in.

FAQ
Vasile Goldiș Medicine Admission Test frequently asked questions
It's the written admission test the Faculty of Medicine at Vasile Goldiș Western University of Arad sets for its English-taught Medicine programme: 60 grid-marked multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, 40 Biology and 20 Chemistry, sat on paper and in person at Arad.
No. There is no shared national medical admission test behind it: each Romanian university sets and grades its own paper under its own regulation. The other Romanian school in IvyTest's catalogue, Titu Maiorescu University in Bucharest, runs 60 questions in 120 minutes with a Biology block plus a choice of Chemistry or Physics, and converts raw marks to a grade with a different formula.
In person, on paper, at Arad, in English, starting at 10:00 Romania time (EEST, GMT+3). Two variants of the paper are prepared in advance and one is drawn on the morning of the exam; answer grids are corrected electronically in front of the candidate.
One point for a single-answer item answered correctly, nothing for a wrong one or a blank; there is no negative marking. A blind guess across five options is therefore worth +0.20 points on average against 0 for a blank, so every box should be filled. Multi-answer items score 0.20 per matched box, which with five boxes still tops out at 1.00 point.
Yes. Article 39 of the Regulation allows an item to have more than one correct answer, though never all five. That is why you cannot stop reading the options at the first one that looks right. The one thing you must not do is fill all five boxes: a candidate who does has that question cancelled, and since no item ever has all five correct, it is never the right move anyway.
With the formula N = (points scored × 1.50 + 10) / 10, calculated to two decimal places without rounding. The ten ex officio points mean the scale starts at 1.00 for zero marks and reaches 10.00 at 60 marks, so each single raw point is worth exactly 0.15 grade points.
A grade of 5.00 out of 10, the only minimum: the formula puts it at 26.67 points, so 27 of 60 in practice, giving 5.05. Below it you are not eligible regardless of rank, and there is no Biology or Chemistry sub-threshold. Above it, places go in order of grade: on UVVG's September 2026 list for Medicine in English, the 12 admitted EU candidates had grades from 7.99 down to 5.80.
Because that is what the official topic list says. The Regulation's own wording is simply 'Chemistry', but the faculty's published topic sheet heads the area 'Organic Chemistry' and gives four headings, all organic: structure and isomerism, the functional-group families, carbohydrates, and the biological macromolecules including proteins, lipids, vitamins and medicines. Nothing inorganic or physical-chemical appears on it.
UVVG's 2026-2027 enrolment-figure table lists 45 places for Medicine in English on the test route, for Romanian and EU candidates, and another 45 in its non-EU column; Romania's government decision for 2026-2027 allows the programme at most 90 students, the two together. It publishes no applicant volume, only each session's list of admitted candidates with their grades, so any acceptance rate quoted elsewhere is an estimate rather than a university figure. What is published is the 5.00 eligibility floor and the rule that places are filled in descending order of grade above it.
Within the EU, UVVG's Faculty of Medicine says its medical degree is recognised automatically in every member state under Directive 2005/36/EC. Outside the EU recognition isn't automatic as a rule, but the UK is an exception. Under the Medical Act 1983 (section 21B, as in force on 12 October 2026), a Romanian medical degree is a 'relevant European qualification', so a graduate who applies to the GMC with one, whatever their nationality, is not asked to show the knowledge and skills other international graduates prove through PLAB/UKMLA; evidence of English is still required, and the rule is UK policy that can change. US-bound graduates need ECFMG certification via USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, the same requirement every international medical graduate faces. Note separately that Romanian is needed for clinical placements from the third year of study, even on an English-taught programme.
Yes. The IvyTest simulator runs UVVG-format practice (60 questions, five options, multi-answer items where the format calls for them, and the real grade conversion) in timed, tutor and review modes, with a free diagnostic available without payment.
UVVG publishes no past papers and no free sample test. Its Medicine admissions page sends candidates to the Vasile Goldiș University Press (editura.uvvg.ro), which sells 2026 question books as eBooks at 55 lei each, in English among other languages: Admission Tests for the Faculty of Medicine. Anatomy (120 pages) and Organic Chemistry Tests for Admission to Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy (52 pages). The official topic list is a free PDF, in English too.
UVVG has not published its 2027 calendar yet. In 2026 the test ran on 2 August and 22 September at 10:00, with online registration from 4 May to 31 July and from 1 to 20 September at 17:00 (extended to 21 September at 10:00). Results came out at 17:00 on the test day, and enrolment closed on 30 September. Non-EU candidates apply in separate document-assessment sessions; the first opened on 30 March 2026.
Biology and organic Chemistry only. The 40 Biology questions cover the 20 headings of UVVG's topic list, from cells and tissues through each body system to the female reproductive system. The 20 Chemistry questions cover four organic areas: structure and isomerism; alcohols, phenols, amines and carboxylic acids; carbohydrates; and proteins, fats, vitamins and medicines. The list, published in English, also recommends books, among them Barron's anatomy and physiology and Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy.
UVVG publishes no pass rate, so the format is the best guide. Time is generous (three hours for 60 questions), the pass mark is 5.00, about 27 of 60, and nothing is deducted for wrong answers. What makes it harder than it looks is the breadth of 20 Biology headings and items that may have more than one correct answer. In September 2026, the 12 EU candidates admitted to Medicine in English had grades between 5.80 and 7.99.
For 2026-2027, first-year tuition for Medicine in English is €10,000 for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and €11,000 for non-EU citizens, stated as full annual amounts. Registering for admission costs 350 lei for Romanian and EU candidates; admitted EU candidates also pay a 2,500 lei file-processing fee, and non-EU candidates in health programmes pay 3,500 lei for registration and processing together. An appeal costs 1,000 lei.
A school-leaving diploma (this year's graduates can apply with a certificate of passing), proof of B1 English, a medical certificate and a psychological assessment. EU candidates add a certified, apostilled translation of the diploma into Romanian and an application for recognition by CNRED, then sit the test. Non-EU candidates are assessed on their school record instead, and also send a motivation letter, a letter of recommendation and a Europass CV.
The Faculty, founded in 1992, teaches Medicine in Romanian, English and French and says it has students from more than 30 countries. Its secretariat is in Building A of the Vasile Goldiș University Campus, Str. Liviu Rebreanu 86, Arad. The Faculty says students train in partner clinical hospitals in Arad and the region, and that its medical degree is recognised automatically across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC.
None of the UVVG pages IvyTest read cites a university ranking, and IvyTest has not checked ranking tables itself. What the university states about itself is that it was founded in 1990 as the first private university in post-war Transylvania, was accredited by Law 240/2002, is evaluated periodically by ARACIS and AHPGS, and belongs to the European University Association (EUA) and the Magna Charta Observatory.
