Student life

Living in Pleven as a medical student

Pleven's English-taught Medicine programme was the first in Bulgaria, launched in 1997, and historically starts in February — a different intake month from most other Bulgarian medical schools, worth double-checking against whichever cycle you're applying to. In August 2025 MU-Pleven put its international students at over 3,000, from more than 50 countries.

Its teaching hospital, Dr. Georgi Stranski University Hospital, has over 1,000 beds.

Pleven is a smaller, inland city — quieter and, on most estimates, more affordable than Bulgaria's coastal schools, though cost-of-living figures found this pass were inconsistent enough not to quote a specific range.

FAQ

Medical University of Pleven admissions FAQ

Yes. Medical University of Pleven delivers Medicine in English and runs its admission process in the same language.

It depends on the school and the cycle. Several universities (Varna, Zlatarov, and Pleven in recent cycles) run the exam fully online and remotely proctored; Sofia University's programme page does not say where its exam is sat. Check the current cycle's format for your target school; this guide notes it where published.

At some schools, yes. Medical University of Sofia's combined exam includes an English component, and Medical University of Varna runs a separate language-competency test alongside its two science papers. Medical University of Plovdiv and Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University set an English diagnostic test only for candidates who don't already hold an accepted English certificate. Not every Bulgarian school tests English at all.

MU-Pleven publishes no applicant numbers, seat count or admission rate, so there is no official measure. The published bar is at least 62% in the official language of your country and a pass in both entrance exams. Selectivity varies genuinely by Bulgarian school; don't assume every one is equally easy to get into.

No separate national board exam. Bulgaria's state exam is built into the final year of the six-year degree itself, followed by free, indefinite registration in the National Register of the Bulgarian Medical Association (BLS).

Yes, it's the 2027 edition, built from the latest admission rules Medical University of Pleven has published. Where a 2027 date or detail isn't published yet, confirm it with the university before you rely on it.
